Quote: They certainly ought to! Ain't that the truth! Now, truth be told, I rarely* buy something that has been fully identified by catalogue number and/or rarity rating, but I certainly look for them among un- or underidentified listings, and anything other than a bog-standard usage is a must buy. *(Bog-standard usages might be a must buy if they're pretty.**) **I'm a sucker for eye candy. |

Thanks again guys.I don't believe how dumb I can be. A duplex listing means one with two postmarks one numerical one in words. So this stamp, where I can see FORD and the first digit 2. Is 246 FYANSFORD, but since it is a duplex and duplex is not listed I presume that means it is not rated. |

Rather than focus on the negative "dumb" reference, focus on the excitement of learning something new That is what it's all about we all had to suffer through the learning phase. FYANSFORD w,w &w Page F45 Cat #20 Unframed Duplex Oc5/04 to feb21/06 Unrated No Image of duplex, lovely Image of Fyansford Post Office 18/2/1968 (closed 31/3/1978) My past life as a Realtor What duplex means? A duplex is a multi-family home that has two units in the same building. These two units always share a common wall, but the floor plan can vary. Units can be arranged either side by side or stacked on top of one another, each occupying an entire floor or two of the building. |

I'm leaning more towards the second number being a "1". (If you enlarge the image, the base of the second number is a small dash). That leads to the possibility of it being Myrtleford (216). This would make it a duplex cancel that is not rated. |

More help please. Some of the stamps are listed as (B), (BO) or (BN). I have read that (BN) is Barred Numeral, but what are (B) and (BO)? I have interpreted the visible AT and 9 in the next stamp as being ARARAT and 93 but my list of barred numerals says 93 (BO) ?, (BN) CATHCART (renamed ARARAT). Is there anything here that tells me if I am right.? |

As I understand it, B stands for Butterfly cancel. BO stands for Barred Oval cancellation. These are early types of cancels used in Victoria before about 1856. The numbers associated with these earlier cancels don't usually match the numbers used in the BN (Barred Numeral) cancellations which started about 1856. The Barred Numeral cancellations that came first were simply barred numerals (non-duplex). This was followed by the duplex cancels that had a numeral and town/date information. The last stamp you've shown is Ararat 93) and is the third duplex. It is not rated.
Hope this helps. |

Thank you StevieG. It does help, a lot. I presume that means with an entry such as :- 2 (B) KILMORE, (BO) GEELONG, (BN) GEELONG Kilmore had the Butterfly cancel and early Geelong cancels were barred ovals. I'm guessing the first of the Geelong stamps is an older (BO). But is the second one also (BO) or is it (BN) with side bars? |

The two stamps that you show are both examples of Barred Numerals. The Barred Oval cancel is quite different and has the format shown in the image below. The Butterfly cancel is also quite distinctive. It resembles a butterfly. See image below. The Barred Numerals are by far the most common and all your examples fit into that category. The Barred Numerals can be non-duplex. In this case they are just a number surrounded by thick bars. The duplex type has the addition of the town and date next to the Barred Numeral. For many cities/towns, there are several different duplex types. |

Thank you once again. I must have found 500 barred numerals amongst dad's stamps and not one barred oval or butterfly cancel to date. I'm sorry I didn't come across you guys 30 years ago. |

Thank you for the images StevieG The butterfly cancel can also be found on New South Wales stamps, mostly Sydney Views, but occasionally a Laureate. |
