I am interested to learn how others approach their pages for common stamps they have in multiples. Does not need to be these but I chose to illustrate my question with them.
I use stock-books exclusively for my collections but approach every group I collect a little differently. Some albums (yes I call them that) are for either mint or used stamps only and in chronological order, some are mixed, some are for a series, some I notate, others not etc.
When looking recently at an album I first put together over 2 decades ago I wondered if my approach was logical or even useful at all, especially for pages of common stamps.
I arranged the two pages shown a long time ago and as they comprised common stamps I never thought about how I should do it. I purely arranged these as a visual group, I did want to see variations in shades, cancels and so forth but paid no attention at all to Dies, or flaws or whatever else and I notated absolutely nothing, as you can see!
Any that were simply totally the same or dull to me were made into little bricks of 100 (just for the fun of doing so) and never looked at again. I have them still as small stacks in a bookcase but never re-visited them to discern what they are.
I wanted to ask what others do. Some of you I would think sort by Die or cancel type or postmark or shades, flaws etc. I know it depends a lot on what interests you, I ask because I have neglected to pay attention to these more common stamps and tend to be more particular about the ones I like more (whether Diadems, Vic half lengths or any other). What approach do you take with multiples like these? What suggestions may you have that I might take on board to make these tell a story in their own right?
Thanks and apologies for a long-winded yet simple query.

I don't collect these stamps in detail, but I do collect the De La Rues.

I started with the SG catalogue listings, arranging what I have in roughly chronological order, and then focused on postmarks.

If you have a lot of bundles of 100, and they haven't been looked at for 20 years, you could be sitting on a potential goldmine for numeral cancellation collectors!

Thanks Bobby De La Rue,

Yes I think I should revisit how I do these. I don't particularly collect these issues. I have a general small State Stamps collection which they simply form a part of. I have tended to pay attention to certain other issues.
I don't actually have a lot of the bundles of 100. I have a couple of each I made as I said for the fun of it (not having decided what else to do with them at the time).
I have some others in bags (both on and off paper) only sorted by issue but un-looked at for anything else. Not so many in total.
I have just realised that perhaps I should be paying a bit more attention to these stamps, more care in sorting and what I choose to include in my albums.
As an aside I purchased a small number of stock-books at a market in Vienna last year (should have bought more but I was tentative about going hard) when I came home and started to re-house them (they were generally un-organised) I became aware that I had a lot of duplicates in the Sweden album I bought - for one stamp alone there were over 400 copies! I quite like duplicates generally but there is a limit to how many I want in any album. I need to give some thought to how I deal with these matters. I do know that giving them to a good home is probably what I should do but I have to decide which I definitely don't require.
Thanks again.

A suggested (thorough!) approach:
(Warning: Only undertake the following if you enjoy doing it - you may find that after all that work, there is nothing of great value amongst a stash of these stamps!)

1) Sort by watermark

  • SG watermark 40

  • SG watermark 65

  • SG watermark 68 (Check for inverted)

  • SG watermark Ww11 (Check for reversed or inverted)

  • 2) Check for Perf 11 (watermark 65 SG314a) or any with double perfs, imperforate edges or mixed perfs [you may decide to leave the mixed perfs for step 6 work (below) but make sure you don't miss a gem if you remove stamps in steps 4 and 5 ....]

    3) Check for double impression (watermark 68 SG 334a)

    4) Check for plate flaws

    5) Take out any with desirable postmarks

Detailed sorting of what's left in each watermark grouping (if you're inclined):

    6) Perforations, shades, paper types within each group of watermarks to assign catalogue numbers

    7) Check UV reactions for interest/shade sorting

There's also specimen stamps, two types of OS punctures, two types of OS over NSW punctures, various other government and private perfins and probably plenty of other things to be found!

    Thanks fairdinkumstamps,

A detailed response which is appreciated (with the caveat/warning as well.
I think I will have to go this route once I have readied myself. I know I have some variants, different perfins and so forth among them. I just never bothered to organise them as you can see or notate anything. I should and probably break open the little bundles and the loose ones to do it properly. Then I at least will be able to decide which ones I want to keep in an album and which are surplus to my needs or interest. I am aware that I have many common stamps (not just these but others also from all over) which I have neglected to pay much heed to.
    Thanks again.

If that assemblage was mine, I might consider having an album with a handful of representative examples that illustrate things that are interesting to me (you), and the balance in other binders functioning as stockbooks.

    Thank you also Cjd,

Your suggestion is also a good one. I think I will try as best I can to identify the variations first as fairdinkumstamps suggested and then do as you mention and decide to represent those in my main album with a much smaller number. I have avoided the idea of simply placing overflow into another stock-book in the past (hence my creation of bundle-ware - bricks - and use of plastic bags etc) but have found it really does not work well. Stock-books exist for a reason I get that. This is all helping me to re-visit my approach.

Another consideration that I should have mentioned (probably at step 6 above) is the identification of Die I and Die II (watermark 40 only) for both the 1d and 2d stamps in question.

For the 1d shields (Die I at left and Die II at right):

More information on the flaws to be found on those stamps can be found in this thread:

    Subsequent follow up question.

I have these also which are clearly on paper, I must have decided at some point not to soak them. I prefer not to soak if there is a complete postmark that would be lost if I do. Many of these are not clearly in that situation (what was my thinking then? I don't know or maybe I already had enough off paper at the time).
What other criteria would you use to keep them on paper?
Given it makes it impossible to determine watermark and also awkward just a little to place in any real order in an album.
I do occasionally just like to include a small number of these examples at the bottom of a page, usually not notated at all. But what do others do?
    Thanks.
