Hi All,

I received a new Siegel Auction Catalog the other day. The Philip Pivawer Collection offerings. Good stuff (but a still out of my range)! I love looking at this kind of thing and wonder about the person who put it together. I found Mr. Pivawer's obituary on the web ... very nice fellow (does mention his stamp collecting). I was curious why Siegel doesn't include anything about him besides his name on the cover. I suppose it was at the family's request. Anyway a very nice grouping that shows his love and devotion to the hobby.

Yeah, that was a little out of the ordinary for Siegel to have not added a paragraph or two about Dr. Pivawer in the catalog for the inquiring minds who want to know.

The obit mentions: "As a young child, Phil returned some cereal box tops in order to receive the prize of several postage stamps. This began his lifelong interest in stamp collecting. He dedicated many hours to researching and developing his collection."

Lots of very well centered stamps which in the end became for me a kind of relentless march of photogenic gems which did not reveal quirks of personality or interest. The highlight is his mint original gum Orangeburg coil pair. (Sc. 389), one of five unused pairs out there for collectors to covet.

In the end, it made me wonder if the family might have resented his collecting.
