Show Your US 1851-57 Imperforate Stamps

This is a continuous show-and-tell thread for US 1851-57 imperforate stamps.

Show stamps from your collection illustrating different design types, paper and printing varieties, recutting examples, double transfers, color varieties, EFOs, cancels, postal history, and whatever else you'd like. Tell us some background about your acquisitions if you desire.

Here is a sampling of #7, #11, #15, and #17. The #11 is my avatar; plate position 64L8, in a deep claret color.

Just a nice imperf stamp.


This is the "Recut Bust" 47R6. It's one of those singular plate position recuts that are nice to have in a collection. This one is on a decent cover.

Those are some nice jumbos, and a great example of the recut bust; a position I've never had the pleasure of owning. Thanks for showing them, stampcrow!

I recall your recut bust cover, and the 4 stamps in the OP have lovely color. That shows how pretty these issues can be.

This is position 23R1, the only major 5c imperf variety.
It's called the defective transfer. Note the white vertical blob to the right of Jefferson.



There is also a known minor double transfer. Those are the only documented consistent plate varieties.

Now we have all 5 design different imperforate stamps in this thread.

Nice stamp and post, txstamp! I was unaware that there were any plate varieties for the 5-cent imperforate issue until your post. Thanks for the info.

I purchased this one due to the top having the look of a double transfer. This was going to be my jump start for studying this issue, 3 stamps later is where it died.....

Wow, nice stamp, stalzer! It's a four-margin #10A. A top-row position with a guide dot at top that is easily plateable. You've done well for having only a few of the three-centers.

It looks like an inking variety rather than a double transfer. Possibly from the paper being too wet.

Well thank you CC that is certainly good news. Of the 4 I own, 2 came in a collection, the one posted above and 1 came from a multi stamp purchase if memory serves me.

Here are the other 3, and as mentioned I stopped at this point because the 1¢ was taxing my brain enough. There are 2 - Type II's and 1 type I. I just filed them as the cheapest ones.

Classic - This is a great thread; I'm going to learn a lot, I'm sure.

This is a #7 vertical pair (21,31L2) with a neat cancel from a historic town. I liked it not only for the cancel, but because it shows the difference between "B" and "A" reliefs so clearly. I bought it from Alan Cohen's recent sale of some or Wade Saadi's 1¢ Franklins. I'm not sure that I didn't pay too much, but nice vertical pairs don't seem to be all that common.

Here's a great rarity that would qualify for inclusion in this thread a little too often for my liking. Position 10R4 for those not familiar. Other than the immediate past owner, the provenance is unclear. Let's just call it Ex. .

Here is another rarity. This is an item that I mentioned in another thread recently. There are perhaps 10 or less known. It is the second one that I have purchased - not as good as the first one but you have to take them as they come when the population is low. This is a combination Scott #7-9 pair or, 9-7 if you are concerned with actual arrangement of the types.

stallzer, Your other three 3-cent imperforates are nice stamps. The first one is from plate 2L or 3, with one line recut in the upper left triangle. The third one is from plate 4, with a typical left frame line that is doubled part of the way, and too close to the design at top.

Laurie 02, That's a nice group of 3-cent imperforates. Can you show a larger scan of the one near the middle with the SEP Cincinnati cancel?

Winston, If I've ever owned the recut bust, I overlooked it. The recut button, on the other hand, I own five of, including two on cover. Here is a 9R2L 10R2L pair in a nice orange red color.
