Mystic has purchased more than one large complete collection, some are private sales and are off anyone's radar. Donald Sundman could have the most complete collection out there, unless these collections are broken up and sold. If he has saved everything he has purchased, it would likely be 400K different easily.

I believe Don Sundman dad had a working and business relationship with Stanley J. Richmond the owner of Kelleher Auctions for many decades . Won't be surprise that the relationship has been kept by the new owners of both firms .

Agree with your statement that Don could have a major worldwide collection , he has both the money and the staff to keep it going .

The question about who had a Worldwide Collection that would realize $850,000 at auction . Could be answered by people like Stanley Richmond and Greg Manning .

There was back in the 1980's and 1990's a medical doctor who would buy collections at Greg Manning Auctions ,these were not regular auction lots but important country collections , they were the $5,000 to $30,000 country collections and he would buy two or three at a time . We talked a few times but he wasn't one to go to the bars or dinners like the other dealers or collectors after viewing lots all day . He was a Anesthetsiologist at Penn State . I forgot his name but he was at many auctions ,the only collector I knew who had serious money in a worldwide collection .

I am new to all this and have to ask, is a 300k stamp collection 300K different kinds of stamps or could it be 300k copies of the same stamp. I inheirited suitcases full of albums and stamps and am just finishing U.S. ones and have a measily 10K stamps but only about 2 thousand different flavors. I have no idea what he had in foreign stamps but it looks like alot more.

I would hope it's 300K different according to some catalogue or other. But, 300K of one single stamp, to my mind that would still be an impressive feat.

I would be amazed if there were 300k ""different" flavors of stamps. By different I mean unique as in if I have 5 stamps and 4 are the same SC number and 1 is a different SC number is that 2 stamps in my collection or 5?

I guess a better way to ask it is: If Dale has 31K different stamps am I safe to assume he has 10x that many total stamps?

Anyone who is using it as a measure of their achievement will have their own definition, probably tailored to their collection.

There is no set agreement on what any of this means. If it makes you happy, that's right for you.

There are well over 300,000 different stamps. How many? Depends on what, and how, you count. Collectors don't agree on that, either.

Good question Cjd... The last time I have a total worldwide different stamp count it was about 620K different Scott (or perhaps another brand) cataloged stamps though 2010.

10K, 31K are all noteworthy thresholds and a lot of hinges any way you slice it.

CJD ---- Agree with you about those who jerk around with the English language . When I wrote the title above ,I wanted to be clear about what I was saying .

The only place were there can be difference of opinions is those stamps which I mount that have different color shades that the Scott catalog doesn't list ,but to correct that a collector would need 200 or 250 different foreign catalogs to confirm, it is not a shade the specialist would not agree with me mounting it .

The other area I have a difference from your posting is color or type of pages in my albums ,it is no surprise that the paper in the stores in Florida , is not the same as the International Paper 25 weight in Chicago after 10 years of using it the firm discontinue it ,so buying it on line doesn't help .Another prefence I have is using seperate binders for each country and not grouping countries in the larger binders , so I have over 150 1 inch binders ,then a few dozen 2 inch and 3 inch binders also , every collectors does what works for them .

You hit it right on the money. I have found that even in the 15 or so years I have been printing my own pages, the paper Used in the beginning is no longer available so their are some slight differences even within a binder if I had to add pages later.

Like you I have many binders, approximately 150 total. Most about 3/4 are 1/12 in and 2 inch, a few 3 inch and a few 1inch. At the moment I only collect the stamps indicated on the Steiner pages I have printed.

Maybe one day I will try to come up with a count of what I have but at the moment I am happy when I complete a set or even better a page :)

I've used the same paper (Staples 67lb Cream Cover Stock) since I started my remounting project back in 2019. I have somewhere around 5000 pages printed and mounted. The problem is I can no longer buy the paper as it is out of stock with no information available as to if or when it will be back in stock. I made an online order for 250 sheets of what I was told was the same item, but sadly it was not the same paper. Much more yellow and not a smooth surface. I used that paper for the Dunes and more recently for Viet Nam and my parallel pages for France. I don't know what I will choose to do if I can no longer get my original paper. But I'm certainly not going to start over!

As for binders, I have a mix of 1 and 1.5 inch D-ring and all are Staples brand (some heavy duty, some not). I have only about 10 binders that are limited to 1 country. I keep everything A-Z and will split out a country into its own binder when it is sufficiently large and I need to make more room in the multi-country binder. I also have different color binders. I was really wanting all of them to be black, but sometimes the other colors are less expensive. What I can do easily is use a specific color for something like Germany, or France and its colonies, or perhaps use the non-black binders for the 1 country variations. I suspect, however, I will eventually go all black and donate the other binders.

if there is a printing shop near you, you could bring them a few pages of your paper and see if they can come close to a match.

To be clear, I was by no means suggesting that someone has to have matching paper or binders. My point was only that you can be happy with what you're doing, and some bloviating chowderhead may still look over your shoulder and suggest that you're doing it wrong, or not to their level.

So what? Keep yourself happy, and keep your stamps safe.

In reading my last post I realized it could mean that I have 620K different stamps... I wish! I'm up to 118,649..

NicholasC---- I am also buying at Staples . I been buying their white 1/2 inch and 1 inch binders by the case . For the larger binders the D-ring binders are the way to go because the pages lay flat while working on them .

They go on sale about twice a year and that is when I hope to pick up a set of color matching binders for a cut down and repunched set of 7 volumes of Internationals which should look good in 12 binders ,they come six in a case .
