Confederate stamps general issues Scott #10 is the only one of 4 varianties that list a frame line. If true cat Val $2,100 for ones showing parts of lines on 3 sides in Scott 2018.

Ash38,

The previous notes are correct. If this turns out to be a genuine frame line this would be CSA #10. The earliest known use of the CSA 10 is April 19th, 1863. I am not convinced that the date on your stamp is March but potentially JUN or JUL - take a good look to be sure. As noted, having at least a portion of 3 frame lines is what the collectors are looking for.

A telling sign of a fake (having lines drawn in) is if there is any color variance between the frame line and the bulk of the stamp. Take a look under good light and magnification to ensure that both the color and the texture of the frame line is a perfect match to the rest of the stamp. Any variance in color or look and feel of the line is not expected.

If you still think it might be a CSA 10, the best thing to do is to send it in for certification. There is value in the stamp, if genuine, but it does take a heavy hit with only 1 frame line showing. Look closely at the top left of the stamp, there may be a bit of a faint frame line there as well. Again, check if for color and consistency with the rest of the stamp.

Hope this is helpful.
Hobsun

Thank you Hobson,
im convinced the frame line is an exact colour match and you are right there is a small portion of the frame line at top left, again no variation in the colour, I've tried the cancel on retro reveal to no avail, I think now it maybe July? im not sure, I've looked at dozens of genuine copies but I just cant call it enough yet, the stamp came out of an old lincoln album with a lot of early US and worldwide material.

It looks like it has a good chance to me. If you want a real expert to comment on it quickly, I recommend contacting Trish Kaufmann.

Thank you for all the replies so far, I did email Trish Kaufmann and get a response, her reaction was that it did appear genuine but will need physical examination to be 100% sure, so my next question is it it worth certificate cost and who am I sending it to, thanks

I would send it to the Philatelic Foundation:

Is it worth the cost to certify? IMO, it absolutely is. A review of Scott 10's that have sold at Siegel show you the potential price range for stamps in different conditions.
