How can you tell if you have a lithograph stamp? This New South Wales stamp has a lithograph variety. Any information is appreciated. Thank you.

One of the toughest questions in New South Wales philately.

I don't own one so cannot do a real life comparison.

The following notes from Hutson may help:

The lithograph has a flat appearance and can't be confused with early engraved printings.

The lithographs are rare. The detail in the design is clear and defined.

In the worn engraved stamps the detail is indistinct - the lithographs don't exist in this state.

The colour of the lithographs is a "pure medium blue, not Prussian but tending towards cobalt."

Check out Abacus Auctions and search so you can compare!

Hope this info helps

EDIT: Post 3000 (just noticed)

I looked at the examples given at siegalauctions and I also looked at a engraved stamp. Comparing those two I could see how one is indistinct and one is clear. Looking at my stamp next too those I have concluded that it is closer to the lithograph print then the engraved print. Thanks for your input everyone.

When I was studying my stamp I noticed the "e" is broken in "New" could this be a retouch or plate flaw?

Based on the shade as it presents on my screen, the stamp is not the right shade to be a lithographic printing.

The color of the stamp on the screen does not give my stamp justice, but I noticed the color does not match. So I studied the detail of the stamp closer and that is how I came to my conclusion.

Here is an engraved issue.

Here is the lithograph print. If you look closely at the design below "New" you can see how clear it is, now look at the engraved print it is very indistinct. Now look at mine? What do you see?

For myself, the color is a first indicator of go-no go and next come the shading dots and lines on the face, especially the nose, which are much more distinct and separated. I do not believe that your stamp is lithographed but a much higher quality scan would help.

PS: Confirmation bias is real.

The less distinct NEW on the engraved print will be from plate wear.

rogdcam is correct - confirmation bias is most certainly real. Advanced collectors look for every reason why their stamp or postmark isn't the rare one

I understand what is being said

I would like to do a higher scan but I can't. The photograph is the best I can do with this tablet I own. The other problem is the photograph of my stamp does not do the color of my stamp justice. Its a completely different color then my stamp. This probably happens alot.
