Yet another philatelic legend has passed away. Besides owning Champion Arthur was a wealthy businessman from the early days of the video industry, a philanthropist, a numismatist and past President and board member of the ASDA. He purchased the American Banknote Company archives in the 1990's which included tens of thousands of world specimens, proofs, and vignettes. Arthur was 80 years old when he left us.
On a recent trip to New York City I very much wanted to visit the store. I called ahead for an appointment, but they would not allow any customers into the store itself. Perhaps it was related to Arthur being ill at the time.
Sad to hear of his pasting ,many don't know that Champion Stamp Company had the largest or second largest inventory of stamps in the U.S. . All neatly sorted in binders on the stores shelves .
They had stopped inside store visits initially due to Covid. It may have been the founder's age too that had them continue this policy after the worst of Covid was over.
From what I got to see when I stopped buy to pick up orders, it is a great store and the website underplays the great riches you can find there. My only quibble is the prices are a little on the high side BUT the inventory is large, the staff expert in stamps, and youa re paying for the high integrity of the business.Highly recommend shoppiong there when in NYC.
