I looked at the Philadelphia RR route agent postmarks in the USPCS census of 1847 issue covers and it looks like the CDS markings are more common than the straight-line markings |

Here's a nice pair of pairs from Louisville with blue and black CDSs: The right stamp on the lower cover is from Position 90R - Double Transfer "B": |

One of my favorites - 5 cent pair on a steamboat cover originating at Louisville but entering the mails at Cincinnati, destined for New York. don't collect the 1847 as such but I have several 1847 issue covers in my Ohio collections. |

Here is a 1st Delivery 5c stamp in the Orange Brown shade used in December of 1847. |

There has been some really nice material posted so far.
From a stamp-centric point of view, I really like the 89-90R pair, with the B double transfer on cover. That's a nice piece Chip. |

(I think) the most common magenta cancel of the era was from Hartford, Connecticut. Here's my example: I bought a Housatonic RR cancel on cover a few years back. I would rather the RR cancel tied the stamp than the accompanying grid. Oh well. Here it is: Lastly, here is a red square grid. I love how the cancel 'pops'! I normally don't like such a bold 'killer' on a nice stamp, but I think this one adds, rather than subtracts, from the overall appearance: |

Nice stuff.
I've always liked the Housatonic RR covers. That's a nice one.
On the Magenta, I agree, I can't think of a more common one than Hartford, CT of this era. |

As I said, earlier, I seem to have a particular yen for cancels. I particularly like 'alternate' colored cancels - something other than the standard red or blue. Black on the 1847's is nice, green is fantastic! I like magenta, mainly because it is different than red. If magenta were common, and red a little scarcer, I guess I'd really like red. I must admit that a nice bright red DOES contrast nicely with the 5c coloration.
I bid on all kinds of 1847's in the Oct 19-23 Siegel auction. Didn't get a single one. For all of you buyers out there, though, I was the underbidder on a bunch. (:-P |

mootermutt987 - I'm like you in that I like nice cancels. We were probably bidding against each other at the Siegel sale. I managed to acquire one that I was very happy with - a dramatic double transfer plus the striking cancel. I feel lucky that Scott Trepel didn't pass on it. |

widglo - nice DT. I don't think I bid on that one. Should've. I think I am holding back a little waiting for next week's sale. It is a beauty - I don't know why that wasn't on my list of 'must haves'. |

mootermutt987 - While your in the mood for betting, are you predicting that because of increased interest generated by the Gross sale that we'll see prices go up for the 1847 issue, or do you predict that the market will be flooded with so much material that prices will fall? |
