Quote:
The late, great philatelist Wilson Hulme, former curator of the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum, kindly plated these for me in 2001.

Classic Coins - I had to chuckle a bit at that. Wilson was a close friend of mine, and I can't recall how many times he told me "I'm not a plater". He would often have me plate his 1c stamps, and another friend plate his 3c material.

So your post evoked instant laughter for me. Your stamps all have imprints, however, so I'm sure that helped. Wilson was no fool - he always knew more than he let on. I'm quite sure he knew more than just a bit about plating, since he had to, in order to do his color work. That said, he preferred to focus on that and other issues, and spend less time on plating. Those were his priorities.

edit: I guess I should clarify and say that the reason I'm laughing is because I can literally see Wilson laughing at me laughing at him plating something after denying said ability many times. He was a brilliant individual and I have no doubt that your stamps are exactly what he said they are.

txstamp, I never could have guessed that he didn't consider himself a plater. I still have correspondence from him with stock cards with his plating annotations on them for the 3-cent perforated stamps.

He was a uniquely gifted person. Like I said, I am quite sure he was under-selling himself as a plater to me and a few other friends. He was well aware of what he knew and didn't know, and would not have plated something without fully knowing what he was doing.

He was an incredibly knowledgeable person. He and I shared the same dry sense of humor, and I don't think I've ever laughed as much with anyone else. I recall getting a Christmas card from him, with a #11 hinged inside it, with a funny note.

Here are 3 of my 3 centers for your consideration. I was able to take part of the scanned image that was generated and cut it down to size.

I will see if I can post some of the others that I have given the time.

txstamp, That's a neat story. You're lucky to have known Wilson personally.

Since we are showing lots of covers, I've got one to share. I saw this at auction a few years ago and could not resist. The great eye-appeal caught me, and the details wouldn't let me pass it up. I grew up in Connecticut and had relatives in New Haven. I am also a genealogist and looked back in my tree - I am distantly related to the addressee. Wow!! This is a #23, pos 40L1l, with a cracked plate at LL. Anyway, enough of my yapping:

Here are some 1857 3c perforated stamps -- nothing special by way of the stamps -- but they are on approval cards made up by Dr. Chase in his own hand -- and to me are a piece of philatelic history.
