No Rod, the numeral in this case is a separate device. A circular datestamp would've been applied somewhere else on the envelope, something like this:

Finches, very nice 1497 Bellambi, would look great in any collection.

Thanks for sharing those covers Bobby De La Rue - great to see the dates that the various types of numerals were in use.

For interest....In this ancient shoe box of unsoaked NSW 1d Reds, numeral 'vertical pairs' were elusive(1) compared to horizontal numeral pairs(16). Members 1d lots may vary significantly ?

I have a small collection of Sydney suburban numerals and of the numerals on pairs of stamps, 7 are horizontal pairs and 5 are vertical.

Of the Sydney GPO duplex cancels I have, the majority are on horizontal pairs.

Makes sense - senders are much more likely to use a horizontal pair of stamps on a letter so it doesn't intrude down into the address.

Nice 4D2 of Goulburn FDS

These had the time incorporated into the datestamp component of the duplex.

Sydney's earliest duplex with the time in the datestamp dates from 1885 so one would assume the 4D2 for the larger country offices would date from about the same time, if not a little later.

Thanks Finches - it's a great area to collect, full of challenges to find the elusive scarce and rare cancels on century+ old stamps from the colonies and early state issues of Australia.

Some collectors just love to accumulate the ones that represent parts of NSW that they have a connection with or interest in - e.g. family homes or workplaces, historical research etc.

Plenty more to come as I cycle through the numbers - and plenty that I'm not currently listing on Ebay that other members might like to share here.
