Hi Tasnaki,

Definitely a 1285 - well done

I know that feeling. When you make a great discovery but somehow refuse to believe your eyes!!

It seems like a 1285 to me also. It has the required three bars at top and bottom with the number encased in a box.

Impossible to say Rod.

If sold as such, they can be had for under $100, or as high as $900. This is the pointy end, if those with the deepest pockets already have one, they're not likely to chase another. More fool them I say!

If not sold as a 5R, they can be found for pence.

The value of 5R cancels is subjective. It indicates five or fewer examples known. If yours is the second copy, high prices can be expected. If yours is the most complete example, the same is true. If the other known copies are superior to your, the opposite will be true.

It is an area where I think major auction houses add value. Online sales for that sort of material to not maximise the potential value in my experience.

What would be a good auction house do you think for scarce cancels of the
States?

Most will want minimum-lot-value material and may not be interested in one-offs.

Phoenix Auctions in Melbourne, hands down, no contest.

Yes, David Wood at Phoenix is the co-Author of Watson, Webster and Wood and has forgotten more than I'll ever know.

Abacus are worthwhile too.

I'd still favour Phoenix.
