Moyland Castle is a neo-Gothic moated castle in North Rhine-Westphalia. Its name derives from the Dutch word Mooiland which means "beautiful country". The castle needed major restoration after WWII, so the interior is not what it once was. The gardens are now beautiful again and host magnificent garden shows. Today the building is primarily an art museum; note sculptures on either side of the stamp of 2007 for the 700th year of Moyland.

Eltz Castle is a medieval castle/fortress nestled in the hills above the Moselle River between Koblenz and Trier. It is still owned by a branch of the same family that lived there in the 12th century. It is one of only a few medieval German castles which were never destroyed. Stamp is part of the large definitive series begun in 1977, designed by Schillinger; "Burgen und Schlösser".

The Eltz Castle stamp (above) is a really nice example of (nearly) naive art, eg, "... a flat rendering style with a rudimentary expression of perspective ...", to wit:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naive_art

Back in the day, I would breakfast at the "hangerim" (don't ask), and visit the nearby GINA Gallery of International Naive Art:

http://www.ginagallery.com

Come to think of it, naive art would make a nice topical collection ;)

Cheers,

Neuschwanstein Castle is a nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau in Bavaria. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as a homage to Richard Wagner. Ludwig paid for the palace out of his personal fortune and by means of extensive borrowing (which later lead to his financial problems). The castle was intended as a home for the king, until he died in 1886. It is perhaps the most popular of all castles in central Europe. Does anyone know if Disney architects also visited? Stamp from the 1977 series and from the landscape series.

(Hi Ikey, nice to see that you visit occasionally. K.)

The Frauenkirche, the Church of Our Lady, in Dresden is one of the most talked about German buildings in the recent past. In WWII, air-raids wiped out Dresden, destroying many historic buildings and churches. Among them was the Frauenkirche, which collapsed into a 42 feet high pile of rubble; the ruins were left untouched for 40 years, a reminder of the destructive powers of war. Reconstruction began in 1994. George Bähr, the architect, was honored in the stamp of 2016 showing the pre-war church.

The FDC for the George Bähr stamp depicts the ground plan of the Frauenkirche and the monument to Bähr. The photo shows the movable scaffolding used during reconstruction.

The Frauenkirche of Dresden at completion of reconstruction in 2005; the walls look a bit speckled because some of the original dark blocks of sandstone as well as parts of the facade could be used again. The statue of Martin Luther survived. For many years one could contribute to construction costs by buying bits of sandstone.

In the panorama photo of Dresden (2014) the dome of the Frauenkirche can be seen just to the left of the crescent moon. Inside the dome is beautifully painted; the dome structure is double-walled and between these walls one can take a narrow walkway to the top!

The Lutherhouse was an Augustin Monastery, built in 1504. Martin Luther lived there as a monk from the time he arrived in Wittenberg in 1508, and then with his family. Since 1883 the monastery is the world's largest museum for the history of the reformation. Stamp issued by the DDR for the 450th anniversary of the presentation of the theses. Old postcard.
