Cologne Cathedral (only an upper view of the main facade) was again part of a definitive series which extended from 1990 to 2003, covering the transition from D-Mark to €. The heaviest of all free-swinging bells, "Big Peter" hangs in the south tower and is rung on special occasions, such as on the holy days of the year and on reunification day, which is on the 3rd of October. (I'll never forget being physically shaken by the vibrations.)

On the day on which construction was declared complete in October 1880, the tip of the south tower of the Cologne Cathedral was decorated in the traditional way with greenery. The ceremony is illustrated in the stamp of 1980. The towers are regularly climbed for inspection. A replica of the tip of the south tower stands in front of the west facade (where a recently renovated section has a lighter coloring).

The Carnival of Cologne can surely be seen as one of the most boisterous outside of Rio's. There is much merry-making (and making fun of politicians!) and at times the Cathedral itself may look unsteady on its foundations. Stamp of 1997, honoring the long tradition.

In 1950 the Belgian Airline SABENA organized helicopter transport between Cologne and Brussels so that travelers could reach transatlantic flights. Sikorsky machines were used. This service lasted until Lufthansa had established its own airport. One in a set of four semipostal stamps of Berlin (1980) with the shadow of the cathedral in the background.

Cologne Cathedral has been depicted on stamps of countries other than Germany. The one issued by Benin commemorates the life of Konrad Adenauer, first Chancellor of Germany, who was also Mayor of Cologne before WWII.

Constructed by King Yaksha Malla in 1428, the three-storey Dattatreya Temple is the oldest shrine in Bhaktapur, close to Kathmandu. Nepal chose this Temple and the Cologne Cathedral for its stamp commemorating 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries beginning in 1958. Both houses of worship are on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites.

It's amazing that so much of the Cathedral of Mainz survived the bombings during WWII. The arches that one sees in the background of Kuol's new stamp of 2009 represent the beautiful cloisters. Mainz, in Rheinland-Pfalz, belonged to the French sector after the war, so the stamps issued in 1947-8 were printed under their authority. Photograph 1945 and renovated cloisters.

The Marketportal of the Mainz Cathedral still has the bronze doors of the Archbishop Willigis dating from about 1009, decorated with the Lions' heads. The stamp of 1975 commemorates 1000 years after the beginning of construction. The Cathedral, dedicated to St. Martin, was completed in 1009. Not far from it there is a very modern sculpture of St. Martin created by Albert Sous.

Rheinsberg Palais with its extensive gardens and parks also belongs to the UNESCO ensemble of Prussian Palaces and gardens but lies a bit north of Berlin on the shore of Lake Grienerick. Since its beginnings in the mid 16th century it has been changed and added to several times. Restoration since the fall of the wall has cost millions.
