Trees On Postcards;

That last card, referring to "Union Oil Company's Natural Color Scenes of the West" were first issued in 1939 by Union Oil Company gas stations in the Western US -- some of the first postcards using the "photochrome" process.

Moreton Bay is a bay on the eastern coast of Australia near Brisbane, Queensland, very important historically in early European settlement in that area.

A lone Aussie, far from home

Shown is an oversized postcard featuring a plethora of palms, Royal Palms on Royal Poinciana Way, Palm Beach, Florida.

I have several cards with trees on them as you would expect from some who collects logging postcards. All my tree cards are Sequoia sempervirens..California Redwood and are giants. Here's a few.













The redwood have such a large root swell that in order to fall one the fallers worked on their way up above the swell using "springboards" a 6-8"wide 6' long board with a T shaped metal end that was driven into the sap wood and other boards placed on them, as seen here. Some stumps left behind were 20 or more in height. A few things of note in this photo, the thickness of the bark, the length of the axe handle and the huge pile of chips below the men.




The trees were so large a diameter that special saws were made, this one is 3 and half time as long as the man on the left is tall. If he was 5'8" ( average height ) the saw is 20 feet long!





This was the Booles Tree near Moody, Cal. It was over 300 feet tall and had a circumference of 109 feet above the root swell, thats is where the upper men are standing. This was the logging crew at Moody.





Just to give some perspective this Southern Pacific card from 1908 gives us some dimentions, as well as a graphic image.

It is amazing at just how wild and wooly California was not so many years ago. Great cards!

Thanks. When most people think about California, it's Southern Calif that they visulize. It's much differnt north of the Golden Gate. Bears are still a problem in parts of Mendocino County.

This beautifull all redwood building is still standing on the north west corner of Main and Redwood in Fort Bragg, California. Now it is a mini mall, and the balcony area in now a bistro style resturant. Excellent fare, the last time I dined there!

I remember shopping in that store as a child, notice the small cable system? Made your payment at the counter, which was seent up to the offfice and returned with your change and a reciept. That system still operates.

Wanting to support stampfan9's then-new thread, I started setting-aside such tree cards as crossed my fingers.

Finally, I picked a properly dramatic tree, scanned it, found the thread, and ... its the same darned tree!

Okay, well, maybe its not the exact same tree ...

But wait, there's more!

Look who owned this tree!

ikeyPikey, Always impressed with your posts. Great card.

I put this card aside for stampfan9's thread because it also features a tree with a name.

The divided back says >1907.

The tree died in 1923 ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Elm

The, uh, quality suggests that the card was printed domestically post-1914.

That gets us down to 1914<p<1923.

Ouch!

Identified as Forest Park on this 1906 post card posted from Eureka and as Sequia Park on the 1912 post card from Beatrice, the 1909 post card posted from Bulwinkle, although it is clearly the same place didn't name the park. It does however better display the true size and density of a grove of redwoods, as these 51 people are seeing.

Oh, Dear, the things people will do to a tree !
