Famous Women On Stamps And Covers

Kató Hámán (1884-1936) was a Hungarian cashier for a railway company, a union representative, a Hungarian Communist Party committeewoman, and an Esperanto enthusiast. Beginning in 1925, Hámán was repeatedly arrested for her political activities, and she died shortly after her final release from imprisonment in 1935. During the 1950s she was a workers heroine in Hungary. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Kató Hámán, designed by Zoltán Nagy (1916-1987), engraved by Mihály Füle, and issued by Hungary on March 8, 1960 to commemorate International Women's Day, Scott No. 1308, plus an image of the undated photo of Hámán which was probably the model for this stamp's design.

Happy Birthday to Margaret Madeline Chase Smith (1897-1995), an American politician and a member of the Republican Party who was the first woman to serve in both houses of the United States Congress, and who was the first woman to be placed in nomination for the presidency at a major party's convention (in 1964.) Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Senator Smith, designed by USPS art director Richard Sheaff, combined engraved and lithography (Ashton Potter), and issued by the USA on June 13, 2007 in its Distinguished Americans series, Scott No. 3427, plus an image of an autographed 1943 photo of Margaret Chase Smith.

Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945) was a German painter, print maker, and sculptor whose artwork relects themes concerning the hardships and suffering associated with war, poverty, working class life and the lives of ordinary women. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Kollwitz, designed and engraved by Margot (Sachs-) Bitzer, and issued by East Germany (DDR) on July 6, 1976 to commemorate the artist's birth centenary, plus a photographic portrait of Käthe Kollwitz in 1919.

In 1933, American progressive activist and career governmental bureaucrat Frances Perkins (1880-1965) became the U.S. Secretary of Labor in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration, and the first female member of the United States cabinet. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Perkins, designed by American artist Ferdinand Ralph Petrie (1925-2007), engraved by Thomas R. Hipschen (vignette) and Robert G. Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell (1900-1949) an American author and journalist is famous on her novel Gone with the Wind.
For it she won the National Book Award for Most Distinguished Novel of 1936 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937.

In film Vivien Leigh (1913-1967) a British stage and film actress played Scarlett O'Hara and William Clark Gable (1901-1960) an American film actor played Rhett Butler.



The greatest role of the career of Hattie McDaniel (1892-1952), was Mammy in this film.

Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807) was a Swiss-born Austrian Neoclassical painter noted for her portraits and her paintings with historical themes. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a Kauffmann self-portrait, designed by Adalbert Pilch, engraved by Georg Wimmer, and issued by Austria on July 15, 1968, Scott No. 815, plus an image of another self-portrait by Angelica Kauffmann, painted in 1770-75, oil on canvas.

Ita Rina - my Avatar Woman (1996)



Ita Rina is the greatest Slovene film actress of world's rang. She was very famous in the period of silent films and the beginning of sound films in Germany and Czechoslovakia. She became one of the greatest European film stars in 30's. In that time the Slovenes have got neither cinematography nor films stars, but on the European film sky photogenic Ita Rina was a queen. Ida Kravanja, later having her artistic name Ita Rina, was born on 7th July 1907 in Divaèa, at that time a small Austrian market town on Kras plateau. She spent her childhood playing with boys and even behaving like a boy. It is also known that art soon attracted her, especially theatre. As she was very attraactive with a beautiful figure, she became Miss of Jugoslavia in 1926. The representatives of Berlin company Ostermayer noticed her and invited Ita for the probation shooting to Germany. Her debut was the role of a maiden in the film "What kids hide from parents", produced by F. Osten. This film was the beginning of her successful film career, reaching its artistic peak with a monodrama Erotikon (1929), a work of famous Czech producer Gustav Machaty. Her last appearing in film was in Veljko Bulajiæ film in 1960. She died in May 1979 in Budva.

Glikeriya Nikolaevna Fedotova (1846-1925) was a Russian actress, "Honored Artist of the Imperial Theater," "People's Artist of the Republic" (from 1924) and "Hero of Labor" (from 1924). Happy Birthday to Susanna Orelli-Rinderknecht (1845-1939), a representative of the Swiss temperance movement and founder of the Zurich Women's Club. Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp featuring a portrait of Susanna Orelli, designed and engraved by Karl Bickel, and issued by Switzerland on December 1, 1945, Scott No. B151, plus a bookplate portrait of the temperance leader which was probably the model for this stamp's design.

Lizicko Stepanivna Ruslana (1973- ) on FDC cover I got from Ukrain.



Ukrainian singer, dancer, producer, composer, conductor, and piano player. She was also the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 with a song Wild Dances. From the age of 4, she was studying at an experimental musical school, at the same time performing her numbers in a vocal-instrumental band Horizon, in which her mother, a professional musician, had been singing. Ruslana started her career as a winner of Slavyansky Bazar song competition in 1996. She won the Grand Prix of the All-Ukrainian television festival of pop music Melody - 94.

The Swiss artist Angelica Kauffmann , was one of the most important neoclassical painters. Although she became (1765) a member of the Accademia di San Luca, Kauffmann was not allowed to take part in the nude drawing classes because she was a woman. In 1766, Kauffmann traveled to England, where she became one of the founding members of the Royal Academy of Art and a close friend of Sir Joshua Reynolds. In Britain Kauffmann made a sizable income from the production of allegorical portraits as well as from her designs for the interiors of numerous houses. Kauffmann painted more than 500 paintings during her lifetime, including numerous self-portraits and history paintings.
