I collect famous women on stamps from European countries only.
But I also collect covers with women stamps addresed to me world wide. Here are two covers:

On stamps are Australian women:
Eva Cox (1938-) an Austrian-born writer, feminist, sociologist, social commentator and activist,
Germaine Greer (1939-) an academic and journalist and a major feminist voice of the mid-20th century,
Elizabeth Andreas Evatt (1933-) an eminent reformist lawyer and jurist,
Anne Summers a journalist, author, editor and publisher.

Indian actresses: Devika Rani, Nutan, Kana Devi, Savithri, Meena Kumari and Leela Naidu.

Hello Primoz,

I had no idea that Germaine Greer was Australian, I always assumed she was American. That's one of the things I love about stamp collecting, you can learn something new every day.

Welcome to the forum and good luck to you in your collecting!

Hi,
I am not interested in stamps of my topics only (on stamps is woman), I want to know what kind of woman is on stamps, where and when she lived, what she was doing...
Here are two "women" covers I got from Canada.

Canadian women astronauts Roberta Bondar, Canada's first female astronaut and the first neurologist in space and Julie Payette, Canadian engineer and astronaut.

Jeanne Mathilde Sauvé (1922-1993) a Canadian journalist, politician, and stateswoman.

primoz - Great topic idea. Welcome to SCF!

Here is my first contribution:

Bríet Bjarnhéðinsdóttir (1856-1940) was an early Icelandic advocate for women's liberation and women's suffrage, and the founder of the first women's magazine in Iceland, Kvennablaðið. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Bjarnhéðinsdóttir, designed and engraved by Eugène Lacaque, and issued by Iceland on March 6, 1978, Scott No. 505, Facit No. 566, plus a photo of this pioneering suffragette. Note the erroneous accent mark placed over the "I" in "BRIET" on the stamp!

María Teresa García Montes de Giberga (1880-1930) was a Cuban cultural promoter and the founder (in 1918) of the Sociedad Pro Arte Musical de La Habana. Here are images of the two stamps (the second one is airmail) in a set honoring García Montes and the Society, engraved and printed by P. Fernandez & Co., S.A., Havana, and issued by Cuba on November 11, 1959, Scott Nos. 615 & C198.

Louise Michel (1830–1905) was a French anarchist, school teacher and medical worker. Michel often used the pseudonym Clémence and was also known as the red virgin of Montmartre. She was greatly admired for her association with the Paris Commune of 1871. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Louise Michel, designed by French artist Huguette Sainson (1929-2011), engraved by Cécile Guillame, and issued by France on March 10, 1986 as one of a series of stamps honoring women, Scott No. 2000, Y&T No. 2408, plus a photographic portrait of Michel taken in 1880.

I expect that would be Virginia Dare, who appeared on a 5 cent US stamp in 1937.

hi,
you are right, it is Virginia Dare. She is "famous" only as the first child born in the Americas to English parents.

Puzzle question:
In Australia is also a stamp with woman of similar destiny. She was put on stamp only because she died.

Saint Gianna Beretta Molla (1922-1962) was an Italian pediatrician, wife and mother who is best known for refusing both an abortion and a hysterectomy when she was pregnant with her fourth child, despite knowing that continuing with the pregnancy could result in her death. Dr. Molla was canonized as a saint of the Catholic Church in 2004. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Saint Gianna, designed and engraved by Francesco Tulli, and issued by Vatican City on May 7, 1996, Scott No. 1009, plus an image of a prayer card featuring a photo of the saint holding two of her children.
