KGV Collector - Great idea for a thread!

Here is my first contribution: René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, (1643-1687) was a French explorer of the Great Lakes region of North America, the Mississippi River, and the Gulf of Mexico. La Salle claimed the entire Mississippi River basin for France. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of La Salle,a map of Louisiana, and two sailing ships, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris, and issued by France on December 18, 1982 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of La Salle's discovery of Louisiana, Scott No. 1848, Y&T No. 2250.

Vasco Núńez de Balboa (c. 1475-1519) was a Spanish explorer, governor, and conquistador. He is best known for having crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean in 1513, becoming the first European to lead an expedition to have seen or reached the Pacific from the New World. Here is an image of a definitive stamp featuring a portrait of Balboa, engraved and printed by the Hamilton Bank Note Company, New York, and issued by Panama in November, 1906, Scott No. 186, SG No. 291.

Mssr.s Cartier (X2) and Champlain.
I believe both gentlemen had a hand in exploring what we now call Canada.

Mr Columbus preferred sunnier climes.

While Mr Pizzaro is known more as a 'conqueror' than an explorer. He preferred golden climes.

We put our explorers up on a pedestal. And rightly so.

Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512) was an Italian explorer, financier, navigator and cartographer who first demonstrated that Brazil and the West Indies did not represent Asia's eastern outskirts as initially conjectured from Columbus's voyages, but instead constituted an entirely separate landmass hitherto unknown to Afro-Eurasians. Colloquially referred to as the New World, this second super continent came to be termed "America," probably deriving its name from the feminized Latin version of Vespucci's first name. Here are images of a pair of stamps depicting Vespucci and an early map of America, designed by F. Caruso, engraved by Mario Colombati, and issued by Italy on December 31, 1954 to commemorate the 500th anniversay of Vespucci's birth, Scott Nos. 665 & 666.
