Is the topic of your thread Eleanor Roosevelt stamps such as this? Or wives of any US Presidents such as these: (NOTE: For the record, the image of the Martha Washington Stamp was taken from Wiki after 12 Midnight on 01/18/2012. How? You can still search and download the images that may be contained on Wiki even if they have "blacked out" their text.) |

Martha was certainly a popular 1st lady for stamps in the early 20th century. note- the second stamp is from the web. Both my copies are in terrible shape. |

Well, sometimes the old husband has to come along. First time for me to hear about Dagestan... Dagestan, part of the ethnically diverse Caucasus region, is an especially rich area of ethnic and linguistic variety. An Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of the RSFSR during the Soviet period, it has continued to be an autonomous republic of the Russian Federation since. There are twenty-six distinct languages in the Northeast Caucasian family. The majority of these languages' speakers live in Dagestan. The largest of these are Avar, Dargin, and Lezgin. The total population of the Dagestan A.S.S.R. in 1989 was 1.77 million. Many other nationalities, such as Russians, also live in Dagestan. |

I'd completely forgotten about this one ... it's what happens when such stamps are part of a larger series: |

An interesting article in a recent edition of Canadian Stamp News pointed out that while Martha Washington was the first First Lady on a US stamp, she was not the first woman.
That honour goes to Queen Isabella on the 1892 Columbian issues. Interesting in that not only was the first woman on a US stamp not an American, she was also a foreign monarch, especially after that whole American Revolution thing that distanced themselves from another foreign monarch.
The article also found it interesting that the Columbian series celebrated Columbus's 'discovery' of America, when he never even landed in what is now the United States. But that could just be picking nits. |

Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt, designed by Imre von Mosdóssy (1904-1995), printed by lithography (De La Rue de Colombia), and issued by Paraguay on July 30, 1964 to honor her for founding the Eleanor Roosevelt Cancer Foundation, Scott No. 830. - nethryk |

I don't have one but what about that reply card - postal stationery with Martha Washington on it? This thread would be a good fit for that one. |

Just yesterday I read that widows of US presidents were given free franking privilege. President Calvin Coolidge died in Jan 1933. |
