Time to get some non-classical musicians and composers up here!

Of these, the Dorseys and Glenn Miller are my faves.

... and here, Mercer and Carmichael.

I am not sure if the portrait on the J Fucik stamp is that of the Bohemian march king or that of his nephew a noted Czechoslavakian journalist executed by the Nazis.

stampfan9 - The J. Fucik pictured on your Czechoslovakia stamp (Scott No. 377, issued on September 30, 1949) is the martyred journalist, not his composer uncle.

Julianus Marie August de Boeck (1865-1937) was a Flemish composer, organist and music pedagogue. His style was influenced by the Russian Five (especially Rimsky-Korsakov), and, along with Paul Gilson, he introduced musical Impressionism into Belgium. Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp featuring a profile portrait of de Boeck, with the score of his song Het kerksken van te lande (roughly, "The little country churches of this land," c. 1918) in the background, designed by Paul Deweerd, engraved by Jean De Vos, and issued by Belgium on December 3, 1977, Scott No. B962, plus a photograph of the composer.

Also, here is the Youtube.com link for a recording of Het kerksken van te lande, sung by Flemish tenor Kurt Fleming (1941-2011): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9K99uv9sjk

Here is an image of a stamp honoring German composer Richard Strauss (1864-1949) and his opera, Salome, printed by lithography, and issued by Germany on September 16, 1999, Scott No. 2056, plus a photo of the composer. Note: Salome, Op. 54, is an opera in one act by Richard Strauss to a German libretto by the composer, based on Hedwig Lachmann's German translation of the French play Salomé by Oscar Wilde. The opera was first performed at the Hofoper in Dresden on December 9, 1905. It is famous (at the time of its premiere, infamous) for its "Dance of the Seven Veils."

Saw and heard Salome in live performance at the Paris Opera in September 2011. The German stamp depicting the nude Salome is not far-fetched as the "Dance of the Seven Veils" is sometimes performed these days by the lead soprano nude or partially nude. Salome can be one of the most dramatic and effective operas in the literature. It was considered sacriligious by some and it was many years before it was allowed to be performed in Vienna. Even the great Gustav Mahler, then head of the Vienna State Opera and one of Salome's fiercest advocates, couldn't convince his bosses to let him produce it. The 2011 Paris production wasn't great!

France 1985 - Violinist in a Bandstand by Peynet

Raymond Peynet was born in Paris, France in 1908. He became a freelance artist and illustrator, working for several magazines. In 1942, he came up with the characters of 'Les Amoureux', 'The Lovers', two simple drawn figures, whose charming pictures have delighted lovers all over the world. They became a success, and soon Peynet was one of the most popular illustrators of France. He drew over 6000 pictures of 'The Lovers'.

NBSTAMPER - Thanks for your "revealing" comments about Salome. It seems that nowadays the most controversial part of the opera is Salome kissing poor John's severed head.

Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Plaljetak and some of his sheet music, printed by lithography, and issued by Croatia on August 7, 1993 to commemorate the composer's birth centenary, Scott No. 171, plus a link to a YouTube recording of Paljetak's song "Ah, donna Clara" (1932): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHcw-icCYWo
