The music for the current National Anthem of Chile, the Canción Nacional (National Song), was composed in 1828 by Catalan composer Ramon Carnicer I Batlle (1789-1855), and the lyrics were rewritten in 1847 by Chilean poet Eusebio Lillo Robles (1826-1910). Here is an image of a stamp featuring portraits of Carnicer and Lillo, designed and engraved by José Moreno, and issued by Chile on September 18, 1947 to commemorate the centenary of the anthem, Scott No. 249, plus a link to a web page where the anthem can be downloaded and heard: http://www.informacion-chile.cl/est...no-chile.htm

I looked this fellow up, but didn't find a whole lot. His name is (was?) Mario Lago, and he was a poet and song writer... also a Communist...

Here is another one of Franz Liszt similar to the one shown
by nethryk, warts and all

I dont know why he is constantly referred to as a being Hungarian?
He was born in 1811 in the village of Raiding which was part of the Austrian Empire. His family both paternally and maternally where German. His birthplace is now in Burgenland Austria.Liszt's native tongue was German. He could hardly speak Hungarian. He died in Bayreuth, Germany.

How does this make him Hungarian ?
OK he wrote the Hungarian Rhapsodies, nice Gypsy music but still doesn't make him Hungarian.

Austria Michel 1099

lithograving - I believe than Franz Liszt may be considered Hungarian because the village of Doborján (German: Raiding) where he was born on October 22, 1811 was at that time located within the borders of the Kingdom of Hungary.

This is another great thread.

I can't post images at the moment but there is a fine British stamp (early '70s) commemorating Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), perhaps Britain's finest composer next to Benjamin Britten. He wrote nine symphonies, several concertos and many distinguished choral works; a master of polyphony. Perhaps someone else can load the image?

Were I to take up a thematic collection, this would be it and thanks to all for the great contributions. Please keep them coming!

As an aside, I am president of our regional symphony orchestra, so have a keen interest in classical music. A distant relative of Bedrich Smetana lives in our City and we performed one of his works recently in our chamber music series. We wanted to create a buzz around this performance but the relative didn't seem to want the publicity.

NBSTAMPER - Welcome to SCF! Although you cannot currently post images, your knowledgeable commentary about music and other cultural matters would be much appreciated nevertheless.
