Hi Rodney, That's a good idea you have here! I've not seen a list of British Government perfins before.

Here's my attempt at cross-referencing them with my 1998 edition of the Tompkins catalogue.

Any with crowns - not true for the 63 pin crown die of James Russell & Sons Crown Tube Works, Wednesbury, Staffs. (the only die listed just with a crown annd nothing else).

edo - not listed

mhf - not listed

a funny looking "O" open at top - ?

staff and snake - ?

atd - A.T/D - Admiralty Transport Department

ca - CA - Crown Agents (but also Church Army)

cofa - C/of/A - Commonwealth of Australia

dsir - DS/IR - Department of Scientific and Industrial Research

hmf - HM/F - His Majesty's Factores,Gretna, Dumfriesshire (but also a little later the Hotel Metropole, Folkstone).

hmfqf - HM/F/QF - His Majesty's Factory, Queensferry (Chester)

hmow - HM/OW - H M Office of Works

hmso - HM/SO His (or Her) Majesty's Stationery Office

invention - INVENTION (curved) - G F Redfern & Co, Patent Agents, 4 South St, Finsbury EC

no2 - maybe No2/N.F.F - Ministry of Munitions, No. 2 Filling Factory, Aintree, nr Liverpool

nsff - NS/FF - Ministry of Munitions, National Shell Filling Factory, Chilwell, Nottingham

nz - NZ - High Commissioner for New Zealand or Inspector for New Zealnd Dairy Products, St Olaf House, Tooley St, London SE1

ont gov - ONT/GOV - Ontario Government Office, 163 Strand, London WC2

pb - PB - The Petroleum Board (and lots of commercial and local government users)

pto - PT/O - Public Trustee office, London

sdc - SDC or S/DC or SD/C - various local government or commercial users

sds - SDS - The Stamp Distribution Syndicate Ltd, 11 Queen Victoria St, London EC

22 csc - 22/CSC - Cook, Son & Co, 22 St Paul's Churchyard, Lndon EC

18 93 2 style - not listed although 18 on it's own is - London Borough of Sutton

comc - not listed

mhjr - not listed

gjr - not listed

tmchy - not listed

reg off - not listed

Maybe I need a newer catalogue!

Firstly, my apologies MHF
I read it backwards, didn't I ?

Sorry, should be HMF = Her Majesties Factories

Secondly, I'll post a few
I just don't want to infringe copyright.

Staff and snake is my next Gaff

It was a P with the leg of the P with an entwined S
so=PS = Perfin Society of London 1984

I spent a lot of yesterday looking at perfins,
and I think I overdid it :(

Cheers

I think I recall an SCF member posting a British Stamp
with CofA, no one knew of it at the time. IIRC.

I'm not generally a collector of GB Perfins, but I just found a couple sitting in a stockbook. Anyone care to help identify them?

Thanks for the information. Just tried looking up Darlington Corporation -- is it the same company that makes transit buses?

Hi wt1,

This was from the local government organisation for the town of Darlington in County Durham (now the Borough of Darlington):

I don`t know what are these perfins, anyway I`ll post them, first queen Victoria issues (on some of them cancellation is -partially- readable. A perfin collector told me he collects them by date.)

First row, back:

DEC/&D (cancellation London 1889), J.S./& S., MJT & C0.
Second row:

T.R&S/R (...chdale, JU 28, 92-Rochdale?),AC (...NDON E.C. JU 30 88),
D.S.
I still have a very few KEVII, some more KGV. Post them? Or these are not official and belong somewhere else?

Hi Wadmalatz, That's an interesting range of perfins you have there. I'll look them up when I get home from work if no-one else has first. I particularly like the way the perfins stand out clearly against the blue paper.

Hi Wadmalatz,

Here's what I found in my catalogue:

DeC/&D (cancellation London 1889) - 11,9,8/14,11 - De Clermont & Donner Ltd, London EC4 - 1878-1939

J.S/&S. - 7,10/12,10 - James Scott & Sons, Timber Merchants, Newcastle-on-Tyne - 1885-1918

TJM/&Co. (This one's reversed) - 8,7,15/14,10,4 - T J Marshall & Co, London N - 1895-1905

T.R&S/R (...chdale, JU 28, 92-Rochdale?) - 7,13,14,10/13 - Thomas Robinson & Sons Ltd, Rochdale (there are two similar patterns in the catalogue for this firm).

AC (...NDON E.C. JU 30 88) - 10,11 - several AC patterns listed but not this one and no other London EC address as far as I can see.

D.S. - 11,10 - William Dawson & Sons Ltd - 1885-1925

Thanks nigelc! Collecting perfin can be an art. Here are some nice displays:
http://www.perfins.org/Exhibit/Exhibit.htm
Maybe one day I`ll organize a few Hungarian ones (I have some interesting covers too). Right now I`m not at home, but I`ll keep posting. And if you are a perfin collector and study them, display them, or know somebody who is doing the same just mail and the ones missed or wanted are yours (his, hers). For me these are useless and maybe someone appreciate them.
KEVII and KGV are coming!
