On December 20, 1960 Japan issued this 5 yen value (Sc #709) depicting handcrafted calves for its Year of the Ox greetings stamp. The stamp shows Little Red Calf of Aizu (Akabeko) and the Gold Calf of Iwate. According to a web site, Iwate's beef is renowned in Japan.

From wikipedia, "Akebeko (Red Bull) is a legendary cow from the Aizu region of Japan, who inspired a traditional toy. Aizu legend claims that the toys are based on a real cow used to build Enzo-ji temple of Yanaizu in the ninth century."

The papier mache toy's head and neck are separate (but attached) and contain a counterweight, so that when the toy is moved, the head bobs.

Here is the Federal Republic of Germany's July 12, 1979 50 (pf) stamp (Mi #1016) commemorating the 450th anniversary of Martin Luther's Catechism. The designer used an image of Lucas Cranach the elder's (1472-1553) woodcut Moses Receives the Tablets of the Law as the stamp's artwork. The image includes a view of "the worship of the calf".

From wikipedia, "According to the Bible, the golden calf was an idol made by the Israelites when Moses went up to Mount Sinai. In Hebrew, the incident is known as 'the sin of the calf'. It is first mentioned in the Book of Exodus."
