Herd Of Cattle? Bulls, Cows And Calves On Stamps

An oxen-driven Conestoga wagon is depicted on this January 14, 1974 10c stamp (Sc #1542) of the USA. Stamp commemorates the bicentenary of the founding of Fort Harrod in 1774 by Capt. James Harrod of Pennsylvania and some pioneers. This was the first permanent English settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains.

Fort Harrod became Harrodsburg, Virginia, and later Harrodsburg, Kentucky.

Here is another oxen-driven Conestoga wagon on a U.S. stamp (Sc #1426). This 8c stamp was issued on May 8, 1971 and it commemorates the sesquicentennial of Missouri statehood. The image used on the stamp is a detail from a mural at the Harry S Truman Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri. The mural is titled Independence and the Opening of the West and it was done by American painter Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975).

On November 2, 2006 Guernsey issued its Christmas set of 12 stamps with the theme of "The Twelve Days of Christmas". The 34 p value (Sc #920) of this set depicts "eight maids a-milking".

The theme of Cayman Islands's November 1, 1995 Christmas set of 4 stamps is "Animals of the Nativity". The 10c value (Sc #710) of the set depicts an ox (Bos primigenius).

Here is the 2 1/2 d value (Sc #136) from the Bahamas's 1948 KGVI pictorial definitive, aka "Tercentenary of Settlement of the Colony" series. Stamp is inscribed "modern dairying" and depicts a grazing herd of dairy cows.

On April 15, 1997 Jersey issued a set of four stamps on the theme of "Local Stories and Legends". The 20 p value (Sc #796) of the set, shown here, features "The Bull of St. Clement."

Whilst he was searching, the bull began to roar - but when the fisherman followed the sound, he found a rock pool, where the rocks had been eroded to form a pipe. At low tide, water was sucked down the pipe, making a gurgling sound, which echoed loudly off all the rocks. The fisherman filled up the rock pipe - and that was the end of the bull of St Clement."

This August 26, 2008 local rate (35 p) stamp (Sc #1335) of Jersey is one of five different "Farm Animals" designs from a horizontally-formatted coil roll. The stamps were reissued in 2010 with the 2010 imprint under the bottom frame line.

On January 26, 1993 Jersey issued its first series of "Non-Value Indicator" stamps in three tiers: 1.) Bailiwick/local, 2.) U.K., and 3.) Europe. Four designs were issued for each tier, all as small format stamps. Two of the designs for the Bailiwick (17 p) stamps feature cattle. One (Sc #616) shows daffodils and cattle, and the other (Sc #617) depicts cattle in a pasture.

Here are two "Zeus as a bull" stamps (SG #s1250, 1252) from Great Britain. Each of the two stamps was issued as one half of a se-tenant pair from the May 15, 1984 "25th Anniversary of EUROPA/CEPT and Second Elections to European Parliament" set of four. The other two stamps are the 16p and 20 1/2p values of the 1984 CEPT common design "bridge" type.

Here is another stamp showing the abduction of Europa. This French 4.40 fr stamp (Sc #1150) of February 27, 1999 commemorates "The Cultural Heritage of Lebanon" and depicts a detail of a Roman mosaic (ca. 200-300 AD/CE) of Byblos from the National Museum of Beirut. Since it is Roman, Europa has been abducted by Jupiter.

On June 17, 1964 Iceland issued this 20 kr stamp (Facit #417) to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its independence. Stamp depicts the country's coat of arms as adopted on its independence.

This 6c stamp (Sc #488) of Australia was issued on October 7, 1970 to commemorate its hosting of the 18th International Dairy Congress in Sydney from October 12 to 16 of that year.

On November 8, 1994 Jersey issued a four-value Christmas set with a Christmas carol theme. The 18 p stamp (Sc #690) of the set, shown here, features "Away in a Manger" and shows a nativity scene, including acow.

Here is the 7 1/2 c value (Sc #257) from Suriname's 1953-4 Native Life and Fauna definitive series. Stamp was was issued on May 9, 1953. It depicts a man using a domestic, or Asian water buffalo to plow a rice field.
