Hi nethryk,

Here is the bronze original from which the French Compagnie Saheriennes stamp was designed. It shows a Legionnaire and a Camel Spahi. I believe this sold for about $1400. Photo of Legionnaire of the Old Legion and Spahi taken early 1900s.

Terry
Edit for spelling.

Hi nethryk,

You are most welcome. 1900 to 1930 is the classic French Foreign Legion period beloved of writers and film makers. P.C. Wren's "Beau Geste" is set in this period, as is the Gene Hackman movie "March or Die".

Bas S Warwick - Sweet!

The enigmatic "Lady of Elche" is a stone bust discovered in 1897 and generally believed to be a piece of Iberian sculpture from the 4th century BC. According to The Encyclopedia of Religion, the Lady of Elche (Roman Illici) is conjectured as having a direct association with Tanit, the goddess of Carthage worshiped by the Punic-Iberians. Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp depicting the Lady of Elche protecting a group of camel riders, from a set designed by Spanish artists E.M. Jimeno and V.D. Urosa, printed by photogravure, and issued for use in the former Spanish colony of Ifni, Scott No. B22, plus a photo of the Lady of Elche bust.
