Gentle request to all: Please show an image of the entire stamp with any close-ups. The audience here is worldwide and may not be familiar with small portions of stamps taken out of context. Added arrows or text explanations would be helpful too. Thanks.

No such thing as a DT on an envelope. Someone with better knowledge of exactly how this occurs will have to explain it.

revcollector here is the explanation I received for the cut square doubling.

The working die used to make this envelope has undergone some rework. This is evident from the doubling of some of the components of the die image. From T of POSTAGE around through C of CENTS, the letters exhibit ghost images of those letters, slightly offset from the main impression of the die's letters. In this example, there is also similar doubling with the inner teeth from S of POSTAGE through T of CENTS.
A hub die is used to refresh the image onto the working die (the steel is softened, the hub die is pressed into the working die as if it were a new blank, an engraver may be needed to clean things up, then the newly refreshed working die is re-hardened and the die is placed back in service.

We know hub dies can be complete reverse images of a master die, or a hub die can be a subset of the overall image. In the latter case, several hub component dies are used to complete a full working die. With the similarity of the dies of this contract (1 cent, 2 cents, 4 cents, 5 cents, all with the same basic design), it is easy to surmise that design components were shared.

While not an EFO today it is surely odd.

1893 50c Columbian Stamp with punch holes
Newspaper Bundle Cancel - A newspaper stamp is a special
type of postage stamp that was used to pay the cost of mailing
newspapers and other periodicals. Although many types were
issued in the 19th century, typically representing rates reduced
from regular mail, they generally fell out of use in the mid-20th
century, as mail services began to arrange bulk handling
directly with publishers. If/when publishers ran out they were known to use large-value regular stamps to pay the revenues.

The 50c Columbian is nice. Thank you for the information on usage. I have only seen one more like this on the same stamp. My question is where would you display the stamp. Would it go in the columbian or in the news paper revenue?

In thinking of this would it go in Specialized usage. Are they are other stamps that would fit in that category ?

So this stamp was used to pay for a newspaper bundle to be broken down and then delivered?

Yes for Newspaper bundles, I have seen Blocks of the 50c and singles of $1
up for Auction over the years.

In Rick Millers article, "Extra! Extra! Read all about U.S. newspaper stamps", Rick states that "A receipt was issued to the publisher, and the stamps were affixed to the receipt stub maintained by the post office and were canceled, initially by punching and later by pen cancellation."

The 1893 issues were perfect timing being the year before the new "Newspaper Stamps" issues were sent out for bid and produced again (i.e. there was a shortage of Revenue Stamps)
