Sorry and slightly left of field. I pay some attention to Vic Barred Numeral cancels but possibly not quite as much as I should. I have J.R.W. Purves' book on the subject which I am pleased to have. However it is from 1963 so I wonder (as I know more recent publications do exist) whether anyone can tell me whether newer publications on this topic merely add useful additional information or do they change anything we know from his work in a major you need to know way. Sorry if this is an odd question but it occurred to me to ask. Thanks in advance. PS: Also how permissible is it to simply offer up images of material I may have (mostly envelopes showing stamps and cancels) in more of a show & tell way than to ask questions or offer substantial or new information? Just asking before I knock myself out :-) |

Sorry everyone, I had no idea those pics I added would take up that much room! I am a bit shocked and embarrassed, will try to do better in future. |

The pics are fine, as is a bit of show and tell The book you'll be wanting is Freeman's "The Barred Numerals of Victoria". I don't collect Victoria numerals but I do collect NSW numerals. Freeman's work on NSW is essential but doesn't entirely supersede Brown & Campbell's work, which was originally released in 1963 also (Tattersall's hoard), although I have the 1977 edition. Fairdinkumstamps might have a copy of the Victoria book for sale? |

Thank you Bobby De La Rue, I will have a look and see when that one was printed. My Purves' has been useful but I imagine more has come to light since he produced that. Much appreciated. |

Just an example I have of a Ballarat cancel. One thing I find good is that the post date by both receiving post offices is the same exactly, don't know if those days will ever return! I also wondered whether anyone knows whether the post offices ever used cancels at all with the alternative but widely used (at the time) spelling of BALLAARAT. I don't think I have ever seen it but I do have a doctor's medicine chest from the late 1800's with all bottles showing labels with that spelling. Just curious, have a good day all. |

The spelling of Ballaarat does appear in two of the duplex cancels (number 5). They are the third and fourth duplexes and were used from mid1868 through to mid 1872. Both are not rated for rarity. An earlier one that had a Victoria duplex also had the longer spelling of Ballaarat and was in use from late 1863 to 1864. |

Thank you StevieG, I appreciate that information. I had wondered about the possible use of BALLAARAT (as it was quite well used in other circumstances for some considerable time). I am surprised to learn it was used for such relatively short periods (probably why I have never come across it) and is still not rated for rarity. I can seldom work out how those classifications are determined anyway. I understand the principle, just the actual application bewilders me sometimes. Really interesting information you generously provided. Thanks. |

Quote: I also wondered whether anyone knows whether the post offices ever used cancels at all with the alternative but widely used (at the time) spelling of BALLAARAT. HarbingerHamster, this one's from 1868. It also comes with some doubling of NCE in PENCE and a frame flaw top left. |

Thank you fairdinkumstamps,
A nice example on an interesting stamp. I will have to go through mine to see if I can find any now that I know that postmark was actually used, I have not checked yet but will. Best. |
