I thought centralising the queries about Vic cancels into one thread (as is the case for NSW) would be a good idea. Here's a new one, either 1961 or 1964 (SS and RR respectively). It looks a little squashed and doesn't perfectly match the images in Freeman. I figure this is because Freeman's illustrated example is a better strike.

Itma,
The first on is MC / 96 (1196) of Tungamah. It is the second of three types and a common cancel.
166 is Wyndham, a common cancel. I work there, it is now called Werribee. |

Many thanks, 64idgaf. Was it common practice to shorten 4- to 2-digit codes? And what was the range of the codes, eg: from 100 to 1999? I see that some of Rod's postmarks are single digit. Are these also shortened forms? |

Itma,
Numbers started at 1 for Melbourne to 2100 King Valley. Not all numbers have been seen.
Hugh Freeman produced the finest book for these issues, "The Barred Numerals of Victoria", Hugh H Freeman, pub Brusden White, 2018.
The were a range of types and designs. Numbers from 1000 to 1599 had the first two digits as roman numerals.
It is a fascinating area to collect. |

This looked like the best thread to add another question. This is Victoria Scott 194, SG 385c, with what appears to be a very bold 5 cancellation. I don't have the literature to go any further. Can anyone help with city / scarcity? Thanks. |

The one from the OP is the 17th duplex, in use from late 1904 to late 1910. A common one, as are most of the Ballarat numeral 5.
The 'duplex' type comprises a cancel with both the date portion and the numeral. |

Another nice pick up today, a $US17 group yielded this '66' cancel. The numbers are 8.5mm high, so it can't be an upside-down 99, the latter is 10mm high. It is the first type of Oakleigh, a south-eastern Melbourne suburb. It is not an upside-down '90' as the letter shapes for that cancel are different. This is rated RRRRR by Freeman in his 2018 second edition, I'm pleased to add it to my collection. |

Another scarce numeral for my collection. Tyers was allocated number 1300. It is a small settlement in the east of the state of Victoria. The numeral was a Roman type so appears as 'MCCC'. A very rare cancel rated RRRRR and a tough item on an entire.
