Hello all,
There is already a thread about Vietnam under "World Covers" but it restricted to stamps and postal history of Vietnam War. I start this thread to show other aspects of Vietnam except wars: Vietnamese people and its culture, its history and tradition, agriculture, fauna and flora, nature etc. Here we can post items from all eras, Vietnam under French rule, independent Vietnam, North and South Vietnam and Vietnam after unification. Please, share with us your items representing the beauty and richness of this country.

Crown Prince Nguyen Phuc Bao Long (4 January 1936 – 28 July 2007) was the eldest son of Bao Dai, Vietnam's last emperor. On 7 March 1939, he was invested and proclaimed Crown Prince, the official heir to the throne, in a Confucian ceremony at Can-Chanh Palace in Hue. In 1997, when the Emperor Bao Dai died, Bao Long received the position of head of the House of Nguyen Phuc. He remained out of politics and lived in Paris until his death in 2007. A set of seven stamps, with two different designs, were issued by Vietnam before partition on June 15, 1954:

The first set of the Republic of Vietnam under Emperor Bao Dai (later, from 1955, known as South Vietnam) is a definitive set contains 12 stamps issued on June 6, 1951. The set contains 4 designs depicting landscapes of Vietnam: Pongour Waterfalls, Dalat: Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi: The Hung King Temple ("Annamite Temple of remembrance"), Saigon: Imperial Palace, Hue: FDC's with the four different designs. Note that the inscription on the postmark reads "North Vietnam" but this refers to the northern area of Vietnam, not the state of North Vietnam established years later.

Quote: 1945 Emperor Bao Dai and Empress. Cinderella. Essay Replica sheet. CV $1
Empress Nam Phuong (14 December 1914 – 16 September 1963), born Marie-Thérèse Nguyen Huu Thi Lan, was the first and primary wife of Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam, from 1934 until her death. She was also the second and last empress consort (hoang hau) of the Nguyen dynasty. The design of Empress Nam Phuong, depicted on the above Cinderella sheet posted by Rod, is based on a real photo. This design appears also on a stamp issued for use in French Indochina in 1943. The second is a colorized photo:

Vietnam was admitted to the UPU on October 20, 1951. This set and FDC were issued on January 10, 1956 to commemorate the Fifth anniversary admission of Vietnam to the UPU. The stamps show the central post office in Saigon. The inscriptions on the black and red postmarks are the same and reads: 5th anniversary independent Vietnam post office: These stamps were overprinted and reissued on August 6, 1956. The overprint reads: Government Post Building. Here is one of the stamps: |

Prosper de Chasseloup-Laubat (1805–1873) was a French aristocrat and politician who became Minister of Marine and the Colonies under Napoleon III. Quote: Chasseloup-Laubat was Minister at the time of the attacks on Danang and Saigon in Vietnam led by Rigault de Genouilly and his successor Counter-Admiral Theogene Francois Page. On 18 February 1859, the French conquered Saigon and three southern Vietnamese provinces. The Vietnamese government was forced to cede temporary control of those territories to France in June 1862. When in 1863 the Vietnamese diplomat Phan Thanh Gian visited Napoleon III on an embassy in Paris, Chasseloup-Laubat pressured Napoleon III to have him give up a promise he had made to return the territories captured by the French in exchange for a loose French protectorate over the whole of Vietnam. He threatened Napoleon III with his resignation and that of the whole cabinet, forcing him to order the cancellation of the agreement in June 1864. Chasseloup-laubat conceived the idea of conquest in the Far east, and asserted in February 1863, "it is a real empire that we need to create for ourselves." In 1864, all the French territories in southern Vietnam were declared to be the new French colony of Cochinchina. Prosper de Chasseloup-Laubat, issued in 1943 for use in French Indochina: Prosper de Chasseloup-Laubat college, Saigon, Vietnam, old postcard (probably around 1910's). After the independence of Vietnam it was recalled Le Quy Don (Information from a Vietnamese FB friend): Prosper de Chasseloup-Laubat statue in Marennes, France, old postcard sent on August 19, 1904 from Marennes:

The traditional themes of Dong Ho paintings are good luck signs, historical figures, folk allegories, popular stories, and social commentaries. Elements of everyday life are well integrated in Dong Ho paintings to express the thoughts and wishes of people.
Here is a set of six stamps (issued in pairs) show several Dong Ho paintings issued by North Vietnam in 1972: Everyday activities - Wrestling:
