Looking only at the letters is not always the best way to plate. It is a very good way to pick candidates. Look at the positions. But also try to look at the rays of the stars and the frames in the corners. Several later plates show a progressive flaw in the 'O' of "ONE".
Furthermore, when someone sells you a later plate with a red Maltese Cross or an early plate with a black one, you have a good reason to check: a red Maltese Cross on a plate 11 might be a very good reason to wait a little longer to add one to your collection: not impossible, but highly unlikely.
