Bobby Thank you I can't wait to source and read. I was just amazed by the date, age of the stamp!

Happy to help Pshann The Laureates are plateable, and in my opinion are a much greater challenge than their predecessors, the Sydney Views. Attractive four margin examples of the watermarked stamps are in no short supply, especially the two pence. Finding them with the 1857 type rays cancels is, I think, the biggest challenge of the series. |

Hugh Freeman describes two variations of type 5 Bathurst duplex cancellations (the numeral obliterator with a 9 in concentric oval rings): 9(11) with a curved tail (rated R) and 9(12) with a long tail. There is also a RRRR type 5 that has no description which mysteriously appears in the second edition of the book but not the first. If that is an error then I wonder how such an addition to the list has occurred. This is the long-tailed version. I hope members might add their own images of type 5 Bathurst cancellations here. |

Nice find FDS A very rare postmark. There is only one type 5 device. The RRRR rating I would say is correct. How the (17) got listed in the second edition is anyone's guess. Anyway, yours is the sixth I've recorded, with three of those on cover, dating between November 1891 and November 1892. NB: The mention of tails pertains to numbers 9 and 10 in the listings. It's just mentioned in the wrong place. |

Thanks Bobby De La Rue - I have also found this to be a difficult postmark to collect.
Just to clarify, does your research bring you to the conclusion that there should not be 9(11) type 5 with a curved tail (rated R) 9(12) type 5 with a long tail (not rated) 9(17) type 5 (rated RRRR)
but simply 9(11) type 5 (rated RRRR)?

This looks to be 102 for Stroud but it is only listed as ray types in the book. Any help would be appreciated! Tasnaki |

Hi Tasnaki, Yours is a 182 of Newtown. It's either the 6th or 7th device, neither of which are illustrated in the book. |

Hi libroteque, While an image would be helpful, I can tell you 55 is Newcastle and is one of the most common numerals from New South Wales. As for value, it will depend on the stamp, but on the law of averages, no more than a dollar or two |

Quote: Certainly possible FDS. In any case I'll keep an eye out for another postmark of a similar nature Following on from my post of 18 April last year (see page 29), this 1857 cover from Newtown to Orange recently came to my attention. The time frame fits, and it's clearly a 2 in the barred cancel. So that makes two examples. |
