Thank you for those preliminary id's! Right now they are tucked away in an envelope, awaiting their turn to be sorted and mounted.

Hi, Fairdinkum:

Are you able to help me out with this NSW cancel on an unwatermarked, 1865 One Penny?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Hi Steve,

A watery 400 of Kangaloon, rated RR. Amazingly, the illustration in Freeman's book shows this postmark on the same type of stamp!

Nice find

Thank you, Bobby. How rare is the RR rating?
Thanks much!
Steve

Hi Steve,

Adding to Bobby's identification of the postmark and RR rating, Hugh Freeman explains the rating system as follows in his excellent 2017 book, 'The Numeral Cancellations of New South Wales'.:

The ratings "reflect the numbers originally recorded in the five major collections surveyed in the 2000-2010 period, plus the new arrivals on the philatelic scene since publication of the 2012 edition. Again, it is important to understand that, whilst the ratings are a reflection of those quantities that may exist, they are not actual."

Under this system, RR represents "11 to 14 recorded".

Happy to help Steve.

For the benefit of the thread, Hugh Freeman's rating system is as follows:

NNR = Number Not Recorded
RRRRR = 1 to 2 recorded
RRRR = 3 to 6 recorded
RRR = 7 to 10 recorded
RR = 11 to 14 recorded
R = 15 to 19 recorded
SS = 20 to 30 recorded
S = 31 to 49 recorded
Not Rated = 50 plus recorded

R = rare and S = scarce

NB: I don't know if the rating system for other states is the same as I do not have the literature.

Hi all

May I please pick someone's brain? I am donating a few envelopes to the National Trust and one NSW 1852 is cancelled 55 (the other two have a dumb obliterator and an impossible-to-read numerical). Since I don't own the philatelist's book, would someone please tell me where 55 was cancelled, such that I can give better info to the National Trust.

Thank you to anyone and everyone who answers.

Regards
Markinsydney

Hi Markinsydney,
The numeral 55 was allocated to Newcastle (edit: as noted by StevieG above).
There are quite a few types, some are very rare, others quite frequently found.

Thank you StevieG and FairDinkumStamps. I can report this to National Trust when I pass over the envelopes. Just for the record the envelopes relate to the Windeyer family of Tomago House (near Newcastle). Their son William (attending The King's School Parramatta at the time of the envelopes) became important in NSW and his son William was a major supporter of Barton and protagonist for federation, which is why Tomago House and the Windeyer family has some importance to the National Trust.

...and you've just helped.

I've just passed my entire states and commonwealth collection to Philas in Sydney for auction. I kept these envelopes because history is recorded in philately, and I salute you all for preserving our history.

Keep up the good work!

Mark

Hi Mark,

The envelope with the illegible numeral should have circular datestamps somewhere on the front and/or back.

Dumb obliterators were used at Sydney and are usually associated with early use.

Could you give us any further information or pictures/scans please?

Windeyer, near Mudgee in New South Wales, is apparently named after either Charles or Richard Windeyer. The numeral, 191, is very rare.

This is H H & Co, Henry Harris & Co, 201 Pitt Street Sydney, General Agents.

It is known from 1898 onwards. It is rated rare!
