Love this Surinam stamps of primates! Here is one I particularly like, of Poland's 2020 issue nr 2 of "Animals great and small". The first series had a chimpanzee and I think I already posted that but here is 1 of four from the 2020 sereis, a ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta). |

On March 30, 1973 Greece issued a set of seven stamps depicting archaeological findings from the excavations at Santorini (Thera). The 30 lepta value (Sc #1068) shows the "Blue Apes" fresco. From wikipedia, "Akrotiri was a Cycladic Bronze Age settlement on the volcanic Greek island of Santorini (Thera). The settlement was destroyed in the Theran eruption sometime in the 16th century BC and buried in volcanic ash, which preserved the remains of the fine frescoes and many objects and artworks...In 1969, the fresco of the Blue Monkeys was discovered and created increased interest in the site. The rocky landscape which the monkeys are depicted climbing upon mimics the similar volcanic rocks near the site presently." |

Your ccontribution is one of the primate stamps shown in a series of sets of 10 self adhesives, each set dedicated to another national park of Colombia. Other species shown include the red howler monkey and the woolly monkey. Like most Colobian stamps, sets are rather expensive. Durng 202, there have been the usual primate stamps from African countries but also some genuineissues. Like this one, from Gibraltar. Details: Design: Stephen Perera Illustration / Photography: Stephen Perera Printer: Cartor Security Printers Process: Offset Lithography Colours: Spot Colours Stamp size: 34 x 34mm Issue date: 2020-11-20 Stamp Values: 30p, 90p, £1, £4 I promise some more issues in the next couple of weeks. Until then, have a safe and happy Christmas/Hanukka/relaxing time and like me, you will rpobably spent some time enjoying your collections. Best all, Cobie |

On November 6, 1995 the Republic of Korea issued this 500 won value (Sc #1729) as a part of its 1993-8 definitive series. The stamp depicts a Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392 A.D.) celadon water dropper. The dropper is pomegranate-shaped with a high relief monkey. From the National Museum of Korea (museum.go.kr), "This celadon takes the shape of an attractively exaggerated pomegranate being embraced by a monkey...The air hole at the top lies within the crown of the fruit, and the open mouth of the monkey provides the spout through which water may be poured." |

This April 9, 2009 55c stamp of Germany commemorates the birth centenary of zoologist, veterinarian, and wildlife conservationist Dr. Bernhard Grzimek (1909-1987). Dr. Grzimek is shown posing with a gorilla on a television screen. From wikipedia, "Grzimek led the Frankfurt Zoo for 29 years, until his retirement on April 30, 1974...At the same time he served as president of the Frankfurt Zoological Society for over 40 years. The society runs a number of wildlife conservation projects both in Germany and overseas; most well known is its ongoing work in the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania, East Africa." |

Grzimek was an amazing person - I remember his television programs. He also produced some classical films on Africa, one of which was "Serengeti must not die", and edited a multi-volume Encyclopedia of Animals. The film was in part responsisible for Tanzania's decision to extend the park. Tragically, Grzimek's son Michael died in a plane crash when surveying the area. But let me show some primates of the area: This MS shows the De Brazza monkey, patas monkey, the greater galalgo, and L"Hoest monkey. The accompanying MS shows the blue monkey and also the chimpanzee. |
