The Kaiser's Yacht "Hohenzollern" design German colonial issues were typographed. This printing process was used for the lower denomination (3pf-80pf) stamps.

Here is a 1901 German New Guinea Scott 9 10pf carmine.

The larger higher denomination issues (1m-5m,) were engraved.

What a great image! It was mentioned at the beginning of this thread how typography is similar to a woodcut printing, and I certainly can see that.

Thanks nethyrk for the great images you have posted here.

Jkjblue - Thanks! In fact, a number of stamp engravers actually began their careers as wood carvers.

Tefloncinco - I appreciate your kind comments and your enthusiasm. However, the stamp whose image you posted above was printed by intaglio (recess) line engraving, not typography. In the first post in this thread, lithograving provided an excellent introduction to the differences between various stamp printing methods. Note that in the Scott stamp catalogue, engraved stamps are generally identified as "Engr.", and typographed stamps are generally identified as "Typo." With a trained eye, one can often distinguish between them at a glance.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a horse engraving in the Carthage Museum, Tunis, designed by M. Besson, engraved by Henri Cortot, printed by typography, and issued for use in Tunisia on March 27, 1951, Scott No. 214, SG No. 331.
