New Zealand released five stamps and a miniature sheet to celebrate the Chinese
Year of the Pig. The stamps depicted three pigs that the country calls its own — the
kunekune pig, the Arapawa pig and the Auckland Island pig. The Kunekune pig
(means plump in Maori) is the most popular of noncommercial pig breeds with its
rotund, pot-bellied body, short legs, upturned snout and lower-jaw tassels. It makes an
adorable and adored pet. The pig is said to have been introduced by whalers and
traders but it is believed to be of Asian origin. They are exported overseas as pets. The
arapaw pig is a feral pig and is believed to be from animals released by Captain Cook
in 1773 and 1777 Once critically endangered, it is now protected by the Arawara
Wildlife Society. Only 100 pigs are known to have survived. The Auckland Island
pigs were introduced into the island by whalers as a source of food for shipwrecked
sailors. Subsequent introductions led to a thriving population which had been
decimated by the 1990s. Only 17 pigs have been rescued from the island and brought
back to the mainland where, thanks to a selective breeding program, their future looks
bright. The stamps and other philatelic products should be available shortly from local
dealers.

On both my son and I ,seeing this topic he now wants to look for pigs or cartoons, this is his love for stamps animals .
