Mexico Cancel On Numeral Stamps - I See Franco?

Hello,

Does anyone know what these cancels are? I see the word Franco but I am not really sure if these are all the same? Any guidance is appreciated as always.

Franco = postage paid, or sometimes not liable for postage.

The best catalog for Mexico postmarks of this period is Peter Taylor, "The Standardization of Mexican Postmarks, 1884-1900".

The mark on the brown 10c is possibly SAN JULIAN, JALISCO. That office had a marking like this, Taylor Type JAL 80/1.

The mark on the red 10c could be some combination of TABASCO or ESTABAN, but I could not find a match in my catalog of markings. Maybe with Retroreveal, one could pick up some more letters and make a better "guess".

The leftmost 1c green is likely ABOSOLO, COAHUILA, as the example I have shows "VILLA" in the center and this one shows a couple of letters which would match that in the center. The top reads "FRANCO EN". Taylor Type COAH 1/2.

The 2c red with "CHO" could be CHOAPAM (OAX 13/4). The other post offices starting with "CHO..." did not have this style marking recorded.

Most of the others do not have enough letters to pin the post office down.

Many post offices used a device similar to this.

I would not bet a nickel on the quality of these guesses.

LOL - well your bet is better than mine! I need to look for the catalogue you mention above - that would be a great addition to my reference material for Mexico. Thank you so much for the information. Rod had also shared some reference information on a past post I made on a Numeral with a postmark I never figured out. I have not seen Taylor's postmark book offered in a while. It was a limited printing. He did a second book, that covered 1821 - 1883, in two parts because it was nearly 600 pages. Both tend to sell in the $100-150 range.

The predecessor book, The Postmarks of Mexico: 1874-1900, by Karl Schimmer, does show up on eBay for $100-150. At that price, I'd wait for Taylor. Taylor had access to Schimmer's working copy and made many corrections and added new discoveries.

You could check with the usual philatelic literature dealers and see if they have one for sale.

You could also borrow a copy from APRL if you are an APS member. This way you could see if you thought it worth the investment.

A copy of the Schwimmer book is available atm on eBay here in the UK for £100. The postage would probably be frightening! It's in the Classiclatinamerica shop - I tried to post a link but it didn't seem to work

Also check for Joseph Schatzkes, The cancellations of Mexico, 1856-1874. Follansbee discusses Schatzkes briefly in The Catalog of the Stamps of Mexico, 1856-1910.

You should ignore the price notes. They were made way back then and probably have no relevance today.

I have all of these but the Wilson catalog. Unless you are going to have a lot of stamps prior to 1880, the Schatzke's will not do you a lot of good.

Taylor essentially replaces all of these and is more current. I rarely look at the others any more [Today was first time in months - to check one of the publication dates.]
