It is a Japanese pictorial postmark. There is a catalogue for these and one sold on ebay a while back. If you collect Japan it might be worth getting one. Otherwise try googling. You may get lucky.

Looks like the postmark has the name of a park, but I don't know which one. Tonymacg would know, hopefully he will chime in.

The postmark is from Saijo Koen-dori post office, in Ehime Prefecture. It even has its own Web site: http://map.japanpost.jp/pc/syousai....300161306000 in Japanese, of course.

The name means Saijo Park Road#65294;From what I can gather from the Saijo town map, the park is largely a sporting centre, with some grassed areas in the middle. I don't know how many birds dare to brave the tennis balls.

I should have explained the full name of the post office: Saijo Park Road.

Incidentally, khj, if you know the relevant prefecture, and you don't mind battling the hiragana, this Web site http://www.mapion.co.jp/address/ will give you most Japanese addresses, down to the local level.

It wasn't much use in this case, because the prefecture (Ehime) wasn't identified, and 'Saijo' isn't the most obvious reading of the characters. It took a couple of guesses to arrive at.

Thank you very much ALL for clarification on Post Office's name/location.

Now, on postmark date , I received info that :

" The 62-yen postage was the norm for a letter up to 25 grams from Heisei 1 to Heisei 6 (year), so I would say it was Heisei 5, which was 1993. "

So postmark date 5.2.15 should be read as : 1993 February 15 , please ?

( "5" meaning 5 years on throne by current Japan Emperor ?)

A last question please. Could you kindly please let me know the name of this warship, and about this special postmark, is it Nagoya 23 April 1935 ?

Many thanks

M.

The postmark is from Kobe, 23 April 1935, commemorating the visit of the Emperor to Manchukuo.

Sorry I can't quite make out the name of the ship - assuming that it is its name. Could you do a nice, contrasty scan of that panel at the bottom centre of the picture, please?

Should have added that your information on the date on the postmark is probably right. The alternative would be that the year is first, which would make it 2003. I have no idea about Japanese postage rates: if the Yen 62 rate applied through to 1994, then I'd guess it should indeed be 1993.

Thank you for all the details ( it's good that postmark is from KOBE - which is a port)

As for the warship's name I got it from here :
