I can't really help but I do sort of understand the markings but not enough to post accurate information about. I have a similar one with very similar markings from France then into New York then on to it's final destination Philadelphia. So, I think that's whats going on here. Your cover should be a little easier to make out the rates and postal markings than mine was however. Mine was transported on the Ship Burgundy and bears it's stamp so it's likely one of those stamps might be from the Steam Ship that carried it. Very nice historical "stampless" cover! Although it's anything but huh? (only in hand stamps though)

I got my answer rather quickly from Richard Frajola. He explained ever detail and was very helpfull. The 90 is really 20 & was sent from Rome 1848 which was under French control.. T.A. Stands for Transit Austria. Has a French border entry stamp. I have all the information I need on this so thanks anyway, Bob
