I know that this topic has been discussed in here before, but, I could not find it. So, I am showing a GB Foreign Section marking on a paper wrapper sent to Montreal, Canada.

The cancel designates "Foreign Section" and the "M" which is supposed to be a code for the amount attracted by that particular piece of printed matter. Does anyone know exactly what this means and how would this wrapper's amount would be classified??

Thanks a lot

Hi Bujutsu -- the M would simply be a code identifying that particular handstamp, one of a series of similar ones with different letters (thus identifying the clerk using it, presumably). I'm not aware of any classification scheme for amounts of postage at this era, other than the basic postage fees by weight -- that sounds like somebody taking a wild guess, unless they have documentation. This was 1½d postage and so weighed between 4 and 6 ounces (see http://www.gbps.org.uk/rates/overse...2-1990.php).

Thanks for that link. I'm pasting the link again because the system automatically pulls in the ) and the . at the end, causing the link not to complete.
