Found this in my modern assorted world kiloware. Looks nice to me.

Has a nice ORBOST / VICTORIA - 1203 barred-numeral split-ring duplex cancellation, (proof that 1203 is Orbost is in the pudding so to speak) on a single and a pair of 1d reddish QV Victoria stamps on piece.

Postmark is 1923.

Is this a variety of the 1901 issue that my non-detailed Rennik's Australia catalogue says is 1d red? or am I guessing at the wrong stamp?

Any varieties possible on these stamps? Any SG numbers or the other detailed Australia catalogue?

Larger scan available.

I found a site called Stamps of Victoria
http://stampsofvictoria.com/01-12issues.php
that is very detailed about this series.

I'll get back to this tomorrow (late late night here).

Hmmm, I think it is Die II but am half asleep.

And I think the year is probably '03' rather than '23'. The Victorian 1ds would still have been perfectly valid in 1923, but obsolete for ten years. Orbost is out in the backblocks - a pretty little timber and dairy town, from memory - but I doubt it was that far behind the times, even in 1923.
