There's way too much violence in the world today (or any day). Stamps are such a nice respite from the scary world out there. While noodling around with my stock books this morning (avoiding work) I stumbled on this crude, but stark image of the Battle of San Jacinto. Stamps can be dignified, funny, even stupid. But I found this a bit surprising. Guess I'm just an innocent.

Well this thread went nowhere fast. Perhaps that's a testimony to all of your aversion to violence. Refreshing. But I stumbled across another unusually violent stamp recently. It's rather damaged so I didn't include it in a recent auction. Part of a 1966 Greek issue celebrating the centenary (centennial?) of the Cretan revolt against the Turks. I think I can just make out a body flying up in the air above the explosion. Jeeeeeez! |

Keep posting jamesw, I always enjoy your stamps and commentary. You're just way ahead of the rest of us with your topical skills That is certainly a strange shape going up in flames on the Greek stamp. Looks like a pterodactyl to me, or perhaps I should say pterosaur. |

What about a naval battle? 275th anniversary of the battle of Gangut during the great Northern War (1700-21) between the Swedish Navy and the Imperial Russian Navy. It was the first important victory of the Russian fleet in its history. (Wikipedia) |

The Battle of Abukir (or Aboukir)(or Battle of the Nile) was Napoleon Bonaparte's decisive victory over Seid Mustafa Pasha's Ottoman army on 25 July 1799 during the French invasion of Egypt (1798). The French forces had just returned from a campaign to Syria, and the Ottoman force had been transported to Egypt by Sidney Smith's British fleet to put an end of the French rule in Egypt.(Wikipedia) |

Now we're talkin'! Quote: South and Central America have many Stamps depicting the numerous Revolutions they've had. I remember my fourth grade teacher telling us that Mexico has a revolution every 24 hours. Took me years before I got the joke. |

I don't have a picture (I have yet attempted to use my scanner) but the newish USPS civil war issues are pretty violent (after all, they are commemorating a war) |

What about Picasso's "Guernica" ? found on a few countries issues. I never understood Picasso, never cared for his work, but this one I find just outstanding. |
