Local guy has a huge box full of very old US checks as well as some specialty companies like coca cola . Refering to the 1870's many of these are stamped with a revenue paid then punched instead of having a seperate rev stamp attached. Question is do the stamped on revs hold any merit especially in a stamp collection vs the seperatly attached revenues and what value would these garner. Sorry can't do a hi res scan they are not in hand (yet)

Nitro, there's a two page article on these in The Canadian Philatelist magazine from July August of last year. I'll scan it and send you a pdf. |

James that would be great-- Looking at buying some of these but not sure what the relevance is and if they are semi valuable $1-2-3-5-10 each sorta thing. |

great little article- Other than the puch and couple script cancels none are stampes with the red paid after the act was repealed so thats a good thing these were used and canceled in period. Trying to talk him into a lot of 20-50 of these as some do have the stuck on revs as well. |

They are called "Revenue stamped paper" and are listed in the Scott U.S. Specialized catalog. Some can get quite valuable, depending on the denomination, design, and/or variety.
Punched or cut cancels going through the revenue portion of the check severely reduce the value. |

Are there any for Pepsi Cola or from Illinos? I have a few revenue stamped paper checks and enjoy them. |

I've secured a deal for 20 or so either with stamped revenues as shown or regular revenues affixed. I'm guessing duplication but all 1800's so there may be a few up for grabs soon. |

Be sure to look them over well there are some MNB fakes out there. If ink is used make sure it is the proper color IE: orange-ish or a golden brown-ish color. Most of the "ebay" fakes I have seen in hand were totally noticeable (signed in ball point pen) or photocopied handwriting on classic "real" check stock. The printed/photocopied handwriting is easy to notice by glancing at it from an angle (the toner is shiny reflects light). I have a few in the design of the ones pictured above the third one comes in a royal blue and orange color. The others come in a few varieties as well but I do not remember them right off hand. MNB also has a nice one with a horse and buggy and one with a steamship as well that also look very nice.
I collected them for the vignettes I find that in our race to become "more modern" we have lost the history of our arts. Checks now are either goofy looking with puppies or cartoons or boring and dull with no artistic design. Same goes for our modern US stamps and currency everything just all looks so "computerized" now *sigh*.....

This gentleman has literally 1000's of old checks but prefers not to sell in any quantity and simply enjoys them. I agree that some of the engraving and art work on checks were as good as currency or stamps way back when. Funny how this is not in anyway a interest area to collect but they just seem to call out. Think its because most of my need list is now well into the $100's so other things are helping pass the time. |

I love old cheques, but stick, for the most part, to Canadian. Love seeing any others though. |
