Hi, I have several friends that save me their office mail. I got this cover from my wife. It was mailed from Italy. The "stamp" states " Stickers are valid only for GPS network" It also has a note "zone2" in the lower left corner. It went through the mail but the stamp was not cancelled, however the cover has the routing barcode on it. What is this? Is it a stamp or just a sticker? What is a GPS network or a zone 2? I covered the addresses for the scan, but they are intact.

Yahoo and Delcampe searches turn up nothing. What's the little imprint at the bottom? Might be a clue.
If it's not a stamp, it could be something akin to a label that occasional makes it through the mail. |

Geographic Positioning System (why you use in a car to find your way around). It is not a postage stamp but a promotional sticker of some sort. Stamp used inappropriately - and given it came from Italy to North America (I assume that's where you are) it avoided well over a Euro in postage. |

Globe Postal Service. The liberalization of the process within the postal service area. The GPS STICKERS can be sold by each dealer belonging to GPS network, for mailing only at GPS boxes. Gary |

Been around awhile, but constant complaints about the length of time it takes to process the letters, postcards, etc. Originated in Italy I think. The link to the website is telling me its unsafe so be careful using their hyperlink. I'm not going to post it here. Gary |

Gary, I looked them up. It is a service in Italy for tourists to mail postcards. They have convenience boxes at tourist locations such as rail stations and hotels. What I gather is that GPS then bulk mails the postcards to the countries for further distribution. What I find odd is that this is not a postcard and it was not sent by a tourist. I will keep this as an oddity and I hope when I come across it again I will have retained some of this. Pat |

Yes, it went to my wife's office in Minneapolis. I imagine the complaints come from the fact that there is an extra step in the process. I just got home from a superbowl party. The host and his wife both save me mail from their offices. One works for the city of Minneapolis and the other for the UofM. Most of what I get is very common stuff but the occasional jewel can find it's way into modern mail, like this Italy letter. Tonight I brought home about 300 covers amongst the very common stuff was, 5 auxiliary marked covers, 2 stamps.com, 3 PNC's, 1 postcard, 16 slogan cancels and one official mail. No jewels this time. I started collecting as a kid by going through the daily mail and I still enjoy it. Of the 300 covers, I will save 12 for myself and donate the rest to a club I am in for their auction. Somebody will bid on them and the money goes to support the club. |

That's a jewel no doubt. I myself used to get letter envelopes and such from all over with my grandmother. She belonged to the Rebekahs and all her friends would save their letters for me. I can just imagine how many I ruined by tearing the corners off instead of keeping them whole. I know better now.
We went to an Antiques mall they have in the city of Pasadena yesterday and I was going thru a junk box of photos and the like and found a rubberband around 78 covers going back to 1896. My wife noticed how excited I was and the lady said give me 15 dollars and their yours. So I begged the boss for 15 dollars and now I'm out of her hair. lol.
I bet the club really benefits from your generosity from that type of donation.Nowadays its hard for a lot of clubs to even stay together especially when they need money to survive. That's very noble of you to do that for them. Respectfully, Gary |

Gary, I figure they are free to me and I get to cherry pick the lot first. I also ruined covers to soak the stamps in my youth. Worse than that I had an uncle that was the county auditor. I had thousands of revenue stamps on documents that were destroyed to save the stamp. If we only knew then what we know now just think of the collections we would have and the cars we would have kept and how smooth we would have been with the ladies, and, and,and........... Pat

Thanks to Gary I know a lot more about this cover. I have a friend that travels to Italy a lot. This cover did not come from her. She always sends me postcards when in Italy and tries to get me special postmarks, etc. I will show her this cover and my guess is I will be getting more like it over time. |
