I must be losing the ability to read in my old age. I can't see a 1/2d green in my Gibbons. All the ones I find listed there are rose or some variation thereof (e.g., lilac-rose and rosine). Does anyone know the catalogue number for the green version of this stamp? Thanks for anyone who can be bothered looking it up for me! Just out of curiosity, is this the smallest stamp ever issued in Australia?

BTW: I shall be keeping a copy of your example, never seen a barred duplex before on any Victorian stamp with a MELBOURNE id, it is usually Victoria. Maybe it's a parcel cancel. Very unusual.

Thanks for the info, rod222. I'm glad there was something interesting about the stamp after all! |

Not sure whether Rodney's or my catalogue is out of date. My SG Pt.1 British Commonwealth lists that misprinting (VICTCRIA) as SG376a. There are several possibilities for jimjamtwo's stamp, due to a variety of perforations and watermarks, but it's one of the 1901 varieties. |

Jimjamtwo, try looking for the stamp as T88. As 22crows says, you'll find a whole swag of them in the 1901 to 1912 printings. |

22crows, it's the Die III variety. I can't see the watermark because it's on a piece of paper that I don't think I want to remove (as it has a little of the interesting cancel on it).
I didn't see the green stamp because SG has two images, one of the original stamp and the later one with the word 'POSTAGE' added. I overlooked the second. |

The postmark looks a little dark and bold, but we must be reminded it's a bantam. I'd bet your wallet that it's part of a roller cancel I can see a portion of a date underneath that may be a clue.

Yep I love these little guys. It amazes me that they actually thought of making a 1/2d stamp half the physical size of a 1d as well as half the value . Even more amazing are the Bantams with a Perf OS There must have been pieces of unsold torn bantams kicking around the floor of every post office. I recently acquired The below block of 100 in which the VICTCRIA error appears 2 in, 4 up from the bottom right hand corner |

Thanks for the welcome!
When I bought it, it was advertised as a "Positional" block, but really I don't see how it could be without any marginals, plus it's only a block of 100 and I'm sure they were printed in a larger number. Is yours a reconstructed full block? |

Possibly "positional block" used because you can identify the error, and the error has a particular postion on the sheet.
I think that info (plate pos of error) will be in the ACS catalogue
I collect, or am interested in Postmarks Gee, I wasn't blessed with the patience of plating stamps, although I have plated a block of 24 cinderllas :)
