Just a point of clarification. The submarine depicted in the cancel and photograph is, indeed, U-11, hull no. S190. She is a post-World War II build. U-11 from WWI was lost during the war. Another U-11 was in service during WWII, but she was scrapped after the war.

I recall reading Surcouf was lost after a collision with a merchant ship in the Caribbean Sea, possibly near the entrance to the Panama Canal. Two 8-inch guns made her exceedingly powerful for a submarine.

You're right, Trainwreck, that is the prevailing assumption that has been written into history.

It was quite a boat. There weren't too many with an onboard aircraft either!
