Long time reader, first time poster...

Are there any methods to "see through" a cancellation?

I don't actively collect GB, but like every dreamer, here's my plate 77:

Any filters I can apply to the image to make it more legible? Or something else?

From the other thread:

Light and magnification. 10x or more.

Also, go grab an image of a known-legitimate 77, as you can compare where the bottoms of the 7's are pointing, if extended toward the center of the stamp.

I would use a digital microscope and you can see things that you cannot see any other way, they are not expensive either around 80 to 100 dollars you can get one from eBay, Carson is a good brand and very easy to use, that way you'll be able to see if it is, also it may be a 177 plate, I don't know, but I hope is a 77.

Having the plate number as part of the stamp is often helpful, but the imprimatur sheets can be useful also.

Thanks to both of you. Realistically it's not a 77, but I'm enjoying the process of trying to work it out.

Had been meaning to invest in a microscope, so appreciate your Carson recommendation.

Going on the assumption that it's one of the 70's, I've managed to rule out a few numbers using the imprimaturs. Will need to do a better scan at some point also.

After a little microscope action and some filtering, I'm settling on Plate 72. The imprimaturs seem to match up so that feels like enough evidence to me. Thanks for all the help!

No chance of it being a plate 77, the bottoms of the 7s are in the wrong place. You might be correct it is a plate 72.
