Cannot come up with any explanation for the use of the 5¢ Prexie coil other than a convenience over payment. Any other input most welcome.

I agree with mml.
While indeed an overpayment, "Convenience overpayment" would be too generous. Clearly a philatelic cover to get the stamp and cancel pairing.
It appears to be unopened or never even sealed. In an odd sense, "too pristine" to be real mail.

Convenience overpayment is a term usually applied to commercial mail, not philatelically inspired mail.

Thank you for the responses. I should've figured this one out as last year I had a similar cover franked with the 7¢ Andrew Jackson Prexie that was posted at Jackson, Wisconsin. The Jackson cover I figured out, but just didn't pay enough attention to the Monroe connection of the 5¢ James Monroe Prexie coil. Thanks again for the the responses.
