Hi all,

I just bought a red monkey stamp of China, 1980. From my knowledge, I thought this was kind of a rare (valuable) stamp. In my search of checking if this is a forgery or not, I was unable to find any documentation on how to recognize a forgery or real.
I only found a topic on an other website which told about the 'furr lines' on the monkey. If they are not on the stamp, the stamp is fake. In my case, they are visible on the stamp.
The seller told me that he brought home some China stamps around 1980, out of China itself. Therefore, I have reasons to believe this one is genuine. However, I think there must be someone here who is able to tell me...?

Hard to tell from this unclear photograph. A scan is better.

At a first glance, it looks fake.

Babyel - The presence of slight offsets on the gum side is a good sign. One way of confirming genuineness is to run a finger (clean and dry!) across the surface of the design. You should feel indentations at the hairline, ear and hands. There have been at least 15 high quality forgeries of this stamp documented so a certificate is always recommended.

The 'furr lines' you mention would mean the engraved portions of the stamp
which do show up in your stamp on the bottom.
The stamp was a combination print of engraved and photogravure.
Most forgeries are usually just offset/litho.

Here below is a scan of a genuine monkey stamp which was owned by
a former member here ,Galeoptix who received four of these stamps
from his missionary aunt visiting China in 1980/81
They look as real as any I have seen over the years.
Notice the vertical inkflow of the red background which indicates photogravure
printing. If the background is a solid colour then it is a fake offset printing.
