Australia 2000 - 2001 Tourism The Twelve Apostles is a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of Port Campbell National Park in Victoria. They are remnants of the original rock formation that has been exposed to erosion. Devils Marbles in Northern Territory are large granite boulders formed by fracturing and erosion of the original rock body. They often are precariously balanced and have irregular sizes. Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone formation in the southern part of Northern Territory. The inselberg (island mountain) rises abruptly from the surrounding lowlands due to its strong resistance to erosion. |

This set of South African Geology stamps marks the 35th International Geological Congress at the Cape Town in 1996. The stamps offer an artistic interpretation of ten different geological provinces of great economic value and major scientific importance in South Africa. Karoo Supergroup: This sedimentary rock sequence covering the transition from reptiles to early dinosaurs. The rocks also provide evidence for one of the great extinction events in earth's history about 250 million years ago. Barberton Greenstone Supergroup: These strata preserve remnants of the earliest Earth's crust. Some of these rocks are dated at around 3.5 billion years and contain traces of very early life-forms, minute blue-green algae. Table Mountain World Heritage Site: This site is known for its complex geology, with thick Ordovician sandstone overlying the deformed Precambrian shale and granite. |

Griqualand West Supergroup: These sediments were deposited between 2.7 and 2.0 billion years ago in an extensive shallow sea. Cyanobacteria of the area and elsewhere released massive amounts of oxygen into the atmosphere. Also, this Supergroup contains the world's largest deposits of manganese. Witwatersrand Supergroup: This 2.97 – 2.71 billion years old sedimentary sequence is distributed along a 350 km long, half-moon shaped basin. The abundance of native gold in the conglomerate strata is without a natural equal anywhere else in the world. Vredeford Dome Meteor Impact Site: This is the oldest known meteorite impact site in the world. A meteorite of ca. 10 kilometers in diameter struck here about 2.0 billion years ago. Bushveld Igneous Complex: This 2.0 billion years old igneous complex stretches over an area of over 65,000 square kilometers and reaches thicknesses of up to 8,000 meters. It contains the world's largest deposits of platinum, chromium and vanadium. |

Kimberlite Volcanic Pipe: Kimberlite originates very deep below the earth's surface and finds its way along fissures and volcanic pipes to the surface of the Earth. It is the most important primary host-rock of diamonds. Phalaborwa Carbonatite: This extinct alkaline volcanic complex was active around 2.1 billion years ago. It holds the largest deposit of copper in South Africa. Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site: This is the most prolific source of hominid fossils on earth. The hominids were preserved in cave systems and karstic depressions within dolomite. |

Argentina 2002 - 2003 Landscapes Talampaya National Park, La Rioja: The park is known for its dramatic landscape of gorges, rock walls, and cliffs as the result of erosion by water and wind in a desert climate. Ischigualasto Provincial Park, San Juan: The park is also called Valle de la Luna due to erosion features such as badlands and sculped rocks. The Late Triassic Ischigualasto Formation contains fossils of some of the earliest dinosaurs. |
