I'm having a little trouble finding the Scott numbers for these. Any help? :-)

The reason you can't find the Scott numbers is that these two denominations were approved, but never issued. I first saw these when they were still in the hands of the Bureau of Engraving & Printing!

Thanks -- that was actually a bit of a joke. I figured they were unissued denominations. I've come across many varieties of currency and securities that never made it into circulation. I suspect we will find more similar items in due time.

Although these are not technically philatelic, I think they may have some interest to U.S. stamp collectors. If for no other reason than their visual appeal.

Here's today's surprise! The first proof sheet of beer stamps I looked at included this one. Someone on the transfer press was having a *bad* day.

And one more check from the 1870s which I found quite interesting. This appears to be for quarterly payments to contractors on a particular mail route. Would this be for overland mail on a specific stage route? Or perhaps an overseas shipping line?

My pleasure, Don! I'm really enjoying going through these proofs.

Here's one that I was hoping would eventually show up -- a Sugar Producer's License. It was grouped with a bunch of maritime licenses; I'll share a few of those, too.

And this last one has a great ornament at the bottom of the frame -- a mythical creature from the deep!

GregAlex:

I will second studebaker51 comments. I am delighted to see these posts and document examples. I collect a lot of different USPOD documents, and the Draft in your 4/21/2021 11:49pm post a few posts early is one I have a particular interest it.

I have recorded examples of this particular DRAFT form used between 1874 and 1880, but it may have been used more extensively.

In addition to the form you illustrated, these forms received a second printing when they were prepared for use. Here is an example used for the 4th quarter of 1874. It has a second printing in red color, with Instructions printed on the reverse (I suspect they are not present of the SPECIMEN imprint you displayed). Notice that this one has a large red DUPLICATE in the background.

It appears that different colors were used for drafts prepared for each quarter. Here is one for the 1st quarter of 1875, now with the second printing in blue. And also with DUPLICATE in blue color.

A third example, this time for the 3rd quarter of 1877. This one in red, but instead of DUPLICATE, it shows the word ORIGINAL.

Based on the Instructions on the reverse, both the ORIGINAL and DUPLICATE copies are sent to the Contractor. He then presents him to his postmaster, and they are paid. The Postmaster keeps both, and returned the ORIGINAL copy with his quarterly Return. The DUPLICATE is retained in his records. This explains why I have seen only the one ORIGINAL example (thus far).

I would also request that anyone with an example of this draft in their collection, please contact me and provide me with a scan of the front and reverse (or post it here or on a new thread). I am attempting to obtain digital scans or examples of the drafts for each quarter in which they were used.

Mike

Mike, those are terrific issued examples! There are a great many checks and drafts that probably have no surviving used examples. This is very helpful to see the colored overprints in place. I frequently come across tints and overprints that are hard to identify, out of context. Thanks for sharing!

Here's one that Eric might be able to explain. This is found as a fairly common remainder -- a Special Tax Stamp for Dealer in Mfg. Tobacco, Series 1874. But what caught my eye was the extra verbiage that extends into the bottom margin. I don't recall seeing any issued this way.

More curiosities from the same batch of Dealer in Mfg. Tobacco STS. One of the benefits to viewing these digitally is being able to quickly compare the images, so that small differences become apparent.

For instance, here is one from Series 1877 that is missing the ornamental lines around the lettering (with a typical version for comparison). It's not clear whether this was an unfinished plate or if some of these might have escaped into the wild.

https://americanhistory.si.edu/coll...nmah_1588109

The other thing I'm noticing is that they seem to have experimented with the position and font of the "check letters" (plate letters) -- sometimes even within the same year series. Here are three close-ups showing different configurations, all from 1874.
